I run Debian and have zero nonfree software on my machine. Ideally, I'd like to be able to buy one of those USB ASICs for $20 and simply plug it into my machine and run my free, open source mining software. Is this possible? If not, why not?

If you run testing, cgminer is at an apt-get install away.

Only GPU mining needs non-free code, and most mining software is free (as in speech) - like cgminer - so yes, it's possible.
