Hello, I know I'm going out on a limb here but a few years back I bought some btc when it was 300$ a piece, downloaded electrum and sent it to my wallet before quickly forgetting about it. While going through old files I came across my .dat wallet file and when I booted it up I noticed I still had some coins in there that are now worth insanely more. Now I know the odds are of me being able to recover them are practically null without the seed/password but in light of todays vulnerability on electrum it had me thinking, is there a bug/hack/etc that I could use to recover my seed from my electrum wallet? It's still running version 2.5.1. Needless to say I could really use that money right now (broke college student) and any help would be greatly rewarded.

The only option it looks like you have is to "brute force" your way back into it. That in itself
is a very complicated/hacker level type of action. If I was in your shoes, I'd move this thread
to the Electrum board in alternative clients. There is an option to move it in the lower left hand
corner of YOUR post. Someone there may be able to shed some light on this for you, but don't
get in a hurry, it could take awhile. Goodluck!!!

You might consider asking the guy who started this thread for help.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=240779.0

He runs a business cracking forgotten wallet passwords using sophisticated hardware and software. Read the feedback he has been given and make up your own mind if you are prepared to trust him with your wallet file.

He can't crack extremely strong long random passwords, but if your password was fairly simple he might be able to crack it.

Thanks for the recommendation! As I said, it's my understanding that odds are that nothing can be done in this situation but I can only hope that maybe I can recover my coins and pay off my student loans Smiley

Can you remember anything about the password like if it used English words, or numbers, or how long it was? A few details like that is all the guy that runs the service needs.

There's no hope if you used software to generate a 50 character password that included special characters and was completely random.

No... the vulnerability only allows retrieval of seeds/private keys etc if the wallet file had NO password. If it had a password, you would only be able to read the encrypted seed/private keys. No different to what you would see if you simply opened the wallet file with a text editor.

About your only option would be trying to brute force it using something like btcrecover (https://github.com/gurnec/btcrecover)... but for that to be of any real use, you really need to have *some* idea of what the password was so that you can try creating a token file... OR, you'd need your password to be relatively short and not complex (ie. 8-10 chars or less and only letters/numbers)
