It is still too early to determine whether KOTO can overtake and outrun the Z-cash, as this project is still in the developing stage. However, you can see the dev team are now organising and gathering things and they keep updating us on the discord. So, right now I can tell you the KOTO will have a potential future in this crypto world.

1/ What happened to the initial founder (koto.cash) ?
2/ After hard fork what is the status of the premine ?
3/ Some peoples didn't update before the HF, are their Koto coins lost ?

1/ Lost
2/ Founder keeps to hodl. Developers get 3% reward after HF.
3/ Koto has life cycle. Although their coins will lost with previous core client, coin may be recovered after install new core client.

I've installed it and fired it up. Seems ok but I haven't really tried much with it.

Just use the pre-compiled exe. If you don't know how to compile, then you probably don't know the code so you will be no better protected.
