If things go as planned, and Megacoin is the first to properly implement Zerocoin, my bet would be on Megacoin. It's definitely too early to make any predictions right now, however. Without something significant happening, I don't think it's possible to predict a clear-cut #3. NVC, NMC, and FTC have been around for a while and are consistently mined which is why their market cap is as high as it is...but none of them really bring anything significant to the table that makes me think there is a chance they truly go mainstream. The same could be said about LTC and BTC, I suppose, but they are simply so well established that they're cemented at the top for the foreseeable future.
I'm not sold on Primecoin nor NMC, despite their innovation, as said innovation does not bring additional value to the coin itself in my opinion. It's like backing money with dirt -- it's backed by something, sure, but is it really better than nothing? Eh...

This is a pretty dumb thread. Everyone will say "nameofcointhatIsupport" without anything real to back it up. Define sucessful? The coin with the biggest market cap? LTC, NVC, PXC and so on, will not suceed.

Primecoin I believe is the number 3 spot. Especially since its not going to be mined with Asics any time soon.
Successful to me means has long term viability, regardless of what someone defines as its value thru greed, ie market cap, price point etc.. A successful currency is one that becomes accepted across a wide range of industries, and can be used for something other than trading on Cryptsy. I don't even think Litecoin has achieved that yet. But then that's my opinion.
XPM is different from most alt coins, which makes it somewhat unique.

It won't be PrimeCoin (the prime crunching is just a gimmick)... But it will be a new Alt launched in the 2nd half of 2013.

My guess for 3 is PPC (actually I think it will switch places and be #2 with LTC being #3). Primecoin will be up there too, as will Yacoin, and FTC for the top 6. But then again, I could be totally wrong.

First of all, the number one coin is the coin that will make me money today.
Therefore the number one coin is a relative matter.

The third coin will be the one with the next biggest community
One of the main reasons BTC grew in popularity besides original
Then when other altcoins came out One of the main reasons LTC grew in popularity - community
my 2 cents

Well you can make or lose money on any coin today. CGB has outpaced BTC gains by roughly 75% over the past few weeks. This doesn't mean it's a threat to BTC...but I certainly made more money with it today (literally) than I did BTC. I guess maybe we're now debating the correct interpretation of the initial question; I thought it was pretty clear.

BitShares... it is the only one that actually innovates on Bitcoin and provides new value such as BitUSD and BitGold assets that track the value of USD and Gold with no counter party risk or issuer. Unfortunately, it is still a couple of months from launch... but based upon VC investment already has a market cap in the top 5.
