I suppose that Binance is the best exchange at the moment. It has a convenient GUI and there is no need to verify yourself to have a 2 BTC daily withdrawal limit. Plus take a look at Kucoin and Huobi.pro. They are pretty good as well.

Kucoin, Cryptopia, Yobit, Hitbitc, EtherDelta, IDEX etc. for the "Shitcoins". If you want to trade "real coins" I can recommend you Bittrex, Bitstamp, Bitfinex, Poloniex.

Also I'd recommend looking at unlisted coins, which you can buy through MyEtherWallet

Bittrex is a good choice, but bittrex can't use USD to buy tokens directly.
Then you need to buy USDT in USD, which can be purchased in your local exchange or in private.

I am currently trading in Bittrex, Binance and Kucoin. It would just depend on what coin you want to buy as they have different coins that may be listed in one exchange and not listed in others. It is also a good way to arbitrage if a coin is listed in many exchange but it is not for beginners because you may end up at a loss if you tried it immediately without understanding the process. Bittrex may have the highest trading fee but still there are many traders using it because there are some coins only listed there and not in other exchange. The same goes with the other two exchange. It would just depend in your research what coin is a good buy nowadays and find what exchange it is listed.

I think that poloniex is also a good exchange with such high trade volumes and it has good reputation. There are also new exchanges like cryptopia but we don't know exactly about how legit such new exchanges are.Hitbtc exchange also seems to have issues nowadays. Its better to stick with the older exchanges.

As a cryptocurrency trader, I trade my coins or tokens using etherdelta and cryptopia, and I am not seeing any bad experience using these exchanging sites. For me, Etherdelta is good for trading ERC20 based tokens because it was easy to use and to transfer tokens. Cryptopia is good for trading several altcoins and your account will be very protected if you use this exchange because it needs email confirmation, password, and pin so it was hard to lose your altcoins. Choosing the best exchange depends on you, if you feel that you are comfortable to that exchanging site, go and use that site.

I have used a few exchanges so far and I didn't have any problem with them. My first cryptocurrency exchange was Poloniex. It works quite good but I decided to switch to Bittrex after I heard that some people were having problems with withdrawing money or accounts being blocked for no reason. Bittrex has a lot of altcoins so you will love it! I have also used Hitbtc for quite long but unfortunately they introduced deposit fee and rose withdraw fee.

If I want to buy some kind of coin, then I look at which exchanges it trades, where the price is better. I go there and buy. But mostly I use Binance & Bittrex. Since you are new, then see if you can register. Since now some exchanges limit new registrations or set minimum conditions for newcomers at $ 10,000.

You can try shapeshift.io or coinranking.com. I'm using these two when I trade my coins and it works good for me. They're easy to use and reliable. But if you don't like them you can try other sites like coinbase, bittrex, and binance.

where to trade depend on which coin you want to trade. binance and bittrex are cool but etherdelta have pool of altcoins. almost 90% of altcoin available in the market is available on etherdelta.

There are quite a few good exchanges, but Binance and Bittrex are the best. Bittrex has halted new user registration, so Binance is the best option. Kucoin has also been doing well recently, you can try it too. Don't invest a large amount initially, start with a reasonable amount and move ahead gradually.
