As all others investments ICO is risky. Most people invest in ICO because they believe in project and it´s product. Most coins dropping just in last week, take a look before, it was huge grow. If you take a look of statistics - almost all coins are more expensive than they were sold during ICO. If you don´t ready to risk - than bank deposit is safe decision. 

Totally agree on that point. The industry is not regulated, thus it is not safe to invest. Def. do not invest all your money or what you can not afford to lose and do not put all the eggs in one basket, simple things are always the best.

In selecting an ICO, you ahouldn'y be lazy studying it first. It's money we are talking about, any bad move you make can cost you a lot. Read their whitepaper, check their roadmap, as well as know their team. Knowing their team is also a critical aspect. You need to know who's behind that project, if it is run by an unknown people trying to make easy cash. Investing in an ICO that is backed by a big company is smart thing to do ( lower risk). Check their social medias too, if it is constantly updated, and ofcourse their community.

I agree with you. There are some potential game changing projects in the crypto market currently, but are not receiving the attention they deserve due to the entire ICO scam controversies which are overshadowing such projects. Personally, I think that Electroneum through its mobile mining aspect and Spectre.ai through its trading aspect have the potential to challenge leading companies in the future. It is true that many ICOS are scams, but this does not necessarily imply that legit ICOS do not exist. You simply need to do your own research and decide which ICO is worth investing into.
