First off, why does this have to be a new thread? Cant you ask this question in the announcement thread, or maybe read it and see if those concerns are already addressed?

People with the highest ability to give merit are the sources, theymos has selected those sources (35, undisclosed).
If they dont use the merit system as intended, meaning dont give out merit to people making good posts, theymos would have made a bad selection.
Upon discovering this, he most likely will replace a source misbehaving with someone he sees fitting better.

No one is bound by contract to give you a Merit point. If you are useful to the community, if your posts are constructive and have a good quality, then someone may feel generous and give you some merit points. Consider it like a like button only given out to people who have made an objectively good post. But there's a maximum amount of Merit points that you can give away, this is generated based on your activity.

That makes no difference. If you notices the queries on those 18 pages, most of them were answered.

I guess there is a total differences between merits and like button. Because like is unlimited, anyone can press the like button if he/she agrees with the opnions of post without hesitation, however, the merits are limited, even for the merit sources, which leads the high-qualitied posts may not receive the merits, not because the post is not good, but it's not best.

I feel that 35 sources are not enough to do this task efficiently (I may be wrong, you guys know more than me).
Bitcointalk community is huge by members, by threads, by posts. It is kinda challenging for those 35 sources I believe.

However, I also believe that the merit system is just introduced and it is right to say that it is under observation and it will get improve whenever it is necessary.

Keep up the good work.

Merits are limited but if you calculate, there are enough. For instance, if we count the total Smerits of current members, Sr members, hero and legendary it will be quite much. Every time they send it other users, that user will also receive half. Every month some amount will be generated from merit sources. Finally this can be adjusted if the moderator feels the need to do so in future.

It would be better if moderators can tell about total Smerits all the members currently have.
