The new Merit system seems ingenious in weeding out spam posters and low quality posts as it depends on the reader's response to the post. Thereby in order to rank up, one must rely on the generosity of the reader.

However, most people don't really bother learning about new stuff. It's 2018 and there are still many people who don't really understand blockchains! In fact, the natural tendencies of people is to just read posts and not bother with interacting with forum threads.

So, basically at this point, I believe only the old guards of the Bitcointalk forum would actually use this system which we have seen in the old "Trust" system.

I propose that the +Merit link be renamed as +Like because most people in the internet understand that more as they've seen it in Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, and etc.

Don't you agree? I believe renaming it would increase its adoption rate.

I have seen variations of likes used on other internet marketing forums and people use them without any issue. It is so important here now that you have to adopt this.

That is a good idea, I agree it could have more adepts. As you said I don't think most of the people would bother to 'Merit' useful answers to their questions, mostly to members and full members. Hero and legendary members are well respected and most likely will get merit easier than other ranks.

The thing is this is not supposed to be granted when you agree with something or 'like' a post. It should be used when it's good quality, with good arguments which make sense (even if you don't agree with), not just 'buy this coin' which you own and like too

Of course some (most?) users will use it as a Like button, but explicitly renaming it that way would make it worst I think.

I think the 'Merit' link should have more information. At least it should include a link to this thread, or perhaps another with clear guidelines describing on what cases merit should be granted and some do's and don't's, some basic rules and etiquette about this

Why would changing it from merit to like make a difference? Liking something is different to acknowledging a post has actual merit as well. Maybe an additional liking system can be implemented at a later date in addition to this system.

I actually love the idea of this "merit" system because it is unique while "like" is pretty common nowadays. It also has different meanings so I bet "merit" makes more sense compared to "like". It could be that people aren't familiar of the word "merit" that is why they prefer to choose "like". I am not familiar with that word too because I am not a native english speaker but I already asked google about it.

Agreed with some of the posters above me. I think merit fits better to describe what theymos is trying to achieve with the system, which is to have better and higher quality posts.
You get merit for posting high quality posts and get promoted based on the merit > you get like for posting high quality posts and get promoted based on the like.
Technically I can like a shitpost but that doesn't mean I will merit it.

I don't think that it is a good a idea to rename the Merit to Like as theymos has also hinted that putting a demerit system is possible if necessary by changing so you are also asking for a dislike which is nothing to be serious about. Merit is a more proper word to be used in a forum where you want good quality posters.

Defenitly not ,Merit has it's own uniqueness. what's te point of being a copycat of other websites ? Merit is more original and special for this forum.
We should give it more time so the members could adobte to it then we can judge . It has only 1 day running ,be patient.

It is hard to please everyone. If it was declared that it will be "likes", someone might have posted about renaming it as it is not unique.

I believe a like system was already suggested by Vod for the new forum and will be implemented so renaming the current one is not an option otherwise it will result in confusion.

The new forum? Is there a new forum in preparation or is it just an improvement of this one? And which would be the functions of the Likes?

It will be new forum software, called Epochtalk, Bitcointalk wont use SMF anymore.
You can look at board dedicated to new forum software:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=167.0
Github https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=167.0
And thread by Vod about "like" button:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=622992.0
I'm not sure that like button will be implemented at all, and I don't think that we need for it, especially when Merit system was added.

You cannot just perform a suggestion by proposing "merit' should be a "like" compared to other social media. This forum is genuine unlike facebook and YouTube ; you just keep on scrolling wasting time if you don't have a business with that. But, Nice try,  If your proposal is interesting and is helpful, then theymos will take action to that.

However, merit idea is still fresh it will take time to be used by other user who are not updated about the new feature.
