Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

This thread would be more useful if it existed in the Beginners & Help board, where Newbies frequently visit. Where it sits now, it's literally next to the Announcement thread of the Merit system, which explains all of the details you mention in the original post.
