Anyone else have problems with the Tradehill Captchas? I've tried about ten times and it can't login because I keep getting the Captchas "wrong". Perhaps I am just a bot and don't know it?

It's the rotated letters that get you. If you see an L, remember, it could be a rotated V. Look closely and keep that in mind and you'll probably get it right at least half the time.

I need to get past these captchas too and even though I've gotten pretty good with it and have a 90% success rate I don't feel it's necessary if you've implemented 2 factor authentication. We're adding a form under the profile right now to disable the captchas. They appear before you login so we can't make them go away but if you activate this feature the captcha can be left blank (or wrong). I just spoke with one of our coders and he's adding that in as we speak. It should be available within a few minutes. I don't want to say 100% incase he runs in to any unforeseen issues but it is almost ready. You can also disable it without enabling 2 factor authentication. For more information on our 2 factor authentication check out this post or onlyoneTV episode 22 http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=28447.msg357955#msg357955Edit: might be a couple hours yet but it's coming.

I did finally manage to login, but I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one with a problem, and perhaps I am a human being after all. Thanks for the info, Jared, and I look forward to not having to deal with the captchas anymore.

Thanks for the info, Jared, and I look forward to not having to deal with the captchas anymore. Glad you were able to get in. The captcha switch is still coming. They're coding away at the moment and working down the list towards it. Can't wait to turn it off myself.

I have had a lot of trouble with the Tradehill login captcha as well. I've wondered why they didn't just use a somewhat standardized captcha such as http://www.google.com/recaptcha.

I wondered why they used a captcha at all. I'm not sure what problem it's intended to solve. What I do know is that the login screen somehow prevents my browser from saving my password, which puts my security at risk and/or subjects me to the inconvenience of having to manually store the password in a separately encrypted text file somewhere. (It's a bunch of totally random text.)

We ended up rolling out a few updates all at once so the captcha was delayed a little bit. We have a new blog which will provide information on all the updates and news related to TradeHill. You can find it here: http://tradehillblog.com/The captcha can now be disabled in your user profile. You will need to login to get to this setting. Essentially it can be ignored and if disabled will allow you to login without completing it or with an incorrect response. Regards, Jered

I like the idea of the 2 factor auth. However, I think it's overkill for login. Especially when you log me out after a certain time. You should just have to to confirm a withdrawal.
I use the Yubikey at MtGox, and it's also a inconvenience, mostly because they log me out after so short a time. I just provided 2 factor login, why are you logging me out?!
In both cases, I would be happy to do 2 factor auth on login if you would just let me stay logged for 12 hours or until I close my browser.

I was introduced to the 'proof of work' idea via bitcoin (Satoshi's paper?) as a method of limiting the number of attempts that a robot could make to a level which would be tolerable to a human. Originally envisioned as a way of dealing with spam mail iirc.
I would much rather us a separate program (or browser plugin) which implemented such a proof-of-work idea vs. messing around with capchas. I'm about half-way dyslexic as it is, and it usually takes me several attempts at most capchas (including Tradehill's.) I would vastly prefer to watch a little mini-miner whirlygig thingy for a few seconds than go through repeated cycles of trying a capcha, then modifying my last string of swear words.
Anyone heard of or seen such a thing?

FYI, the captchas have now been marked as optional by tradehill. You can disable them in your profile.

Captchas are good...but there is always a way around anything.. just set up a free pron site and have your viewers solve the captchas for you. I heard the guys who make concert ticket scalping bots use a method something like that...grab the image, get someone else to solve it, then have your bot post the solution back.
