Which is more irresponsible: breaking open your Jalapeno and (probably?) messing up the warranty, or letting it run hot as hell, the way it was born?

I have a handful of upgraded Jalapenos running ~7GH/s. I cracked one open because the heatsink had come loose during shipping (I guess) and the fan was hitting it, and I never reattached the side panels after I (mostly) fixed it. The A/C blows on it and all the metal, including the heatsink, is pleasingly cool to the touch. But I probably effed up the warranty, right?

I have 4 other Jalapenos, also enjoying the fresh breeze of the A/C, but they've never been opened. They look stylish enough, but they get so darn warm. Almost hot to the touch, right in front of the A/C. And now that I've seen the insides, how the heck does the cooling make any sense at all? An intake vent low on one side, an exhaust vent high on the opposite side, but in between is just a fan blowing... down on the heatsink? Even though the exhaust is above it, and the intake is below the fan? With a metal plate directly above the fan's intake? I just can't make sense of it.

Don't I have a responsibility, in the name of helping stuff work, to free these little monkeys from their crazy, stifling cages? Can anyone explain to me how they're cooling/ventilation is supposed to work?

Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

Supposedly, just removing/replacing the heatsink & compound/TIM pads does not void the warranty..........

But,playing with the firmware & bricking your unit does.........

Now,play with your fans, flip em or replace then with higher CFM ones.Removing the covers worked for me,for now.Temps dropped by 5C  Wink Getting down to 64C if my room is 24C.

Thats another factor, your room temp unfortunately Sad  These are better than the FPGA's though.......

That's what I'm thinking -- just removing the case seems like a big improvement!

Free them! I flashed so I voided my warranty. The only BFL gear I got was 2 5ghs jalapenos they have both been flashed. One doing 8.02 and the other happy at 7.25. The 8 gh/s runs 49 with the case on and 43 with the case off.

I know you didn't care about the flashing part, but I say Naked is best. I read somewhere removing the heatsink voided warranty but that cant be the case as Josh has stated you can replace a broken fan. On a lot of the Jalapenos you have to pull the heatsink to unplug the fan so that should not be an issue. Naked Jalapenos are the best! Smiley

And as stated above, flip the fan.

Man, I wish I could change my avatar!

Personally, I ordered my AVR Dragon the say I received my Jalapenos (last week).

I've not yet disassembled them.  Once I do I can't say for sure if I'll leave them naked or not.  They do look nice and pretty clothed.

Hack their arses to make them hash as much as they possibly can while their hashrate is still meaningful.

Aren't you going to mention what overvoltage conditions can do to electronics that run this way?

Do you even know?  Huh If you do: you could at least warn him, in case he doesn't have the background to understand the implications.
