I've been saving this somewhat guide for a while now since i am not sure where to put this. I also thought that posting this would increase the number of merit related thread in the Meta section, another reason why i'm hesitating about this. But here goes.

We all know that the only way to get a merit is by hoping for others to give us some, provided that we produce quality posts. Some people believe that they're making quality posts but can't reckon why they don't receive any merits.

Although I don't have much, but surely I have been blessed than most by some members and now I want to pay it forward. I have started from the bottom just like most of you that's why I want to help those who are clueless on what to do.

This is what I usually consider when posting and replying to threads, three easy and simple things to consider when posting. This may be common-sense but I hope this helps.

Steps:

1. Pick a topic.

Picking a topic to post on to may be the hardest part in the guide but any topic of your choice will do! I usually pick topics that are fresh(post that have few views and replies). Why? Because it would be an advantage if you answered the topic first, there would be no restraints and you can freely say what you want to say. Replying to the thread would be like a plain canvas waiting for unlimited possibilities. Picking an old topic is not quite bad either, especially if the topic is really interesting, but replies would be limited since most of the ideas are already laid off, including what you may be thinking and if this is the case, better not reply anymore and just pick another topic since this would just cause spamming of threads.

In addition, if you picked a fresh topic, people who are viewing the thread will see your reply on top plus it won't be burried with tons of incoming replies. Thus, giving your post a safe and sweet spot for any credit-giver.

2. Know the topic.

Question: Do you know the topic?
If yes: Good! Proceed to step 3.
If no: Research on the topic or go back to step 1.

Researching about the topic doesn't just mean reading an article or two, it can also be(but not required) watching videos about the topic or viewing some infographic about it. Anything goes as long as you understand and learn something new. If you think you're knowledgable enough to answer then proceed to step 3.

3. Answer the topic.

After researching, with your own words, try to answer the topic. Remember that answers may be short or long, it need not to be technical nor scientific. It just need to be clear, concise, and most of all sensible for everyone to understand. And don't even think about plagiarizing an article saying that you've made a good post, because people read, and if people noticed that you just copy/pasted an article then be ready for the consequences. Are you really trying to risk your account for some merits? Merits can be earned anytime but activities, reputation, and trusts takes time.

Now that you have answered the topic, be confident on what you have wrote and try not to think much about receiving merits. Continue on doing quality posts and im sure, little by little, people would notice and reward you for that. That would be all, thank you and godspeed!

You wrote such a big post about such obvious thing, I am just surprised how you could find so many words for explainment of the most simple way: find a topic, reply it if you know the point. That's all!
I count my own comments just like you have said, but why I still not get a Merit then? Grin I think other users feel the same about their posts. So, your strategy doesn't work in many cases.

You are good at adding the fluff but do we really need it ? If everyone did the research as per you mentioned in step 2, it will take them an hour to come up with a reply. It will be good for the forum but practically many members will not be able to give so much time voluntarily.

I'm also surprised! I think it's already in me haha, things that are simple in my mind translates a lot when i try to speak and long thoughts becomes short. But don't worry! If you think you're making good posts i'm sure people would notice it little by little, be patient, it will soon pay off. If you think you're doing everything and still people don't notice your posts, then shake things up a bit. Maybe try doing unique, i tried to make a flow chart about this post but i don't have the time to do so, try those things, be yourself, be unique.

This strategy is not full-proof this is just what i do, i don't think there's anything special about this. I am only paying forward. But it would be awesome for me if i could help others in little ways like this.

Thank you for sparing your time with me. Hope you can gain merits soon! Smiley

I do not need someones approval for things that i will say.

If everyone did some research it would be better for the forum you think so too right? Posts would be more sensible and this 'forum' would be more like a forum (people discussing instead of people just replying and won't even interact). Let's stop at "it would be better for the forum", let's not think about the practicallity of doing research. See if people really want to gain merits and improve their ways, they will have time to do so.

Should there actually be the guide to earning merit? I mean, it's not like something collectible or requires a special approach to get it.

Just try to write quality posts and don't pay attention to it, otherwise you'll overcomplicate your post because you're focusing on earning merit.

Need some spare btc for a new PC that can at least run Adobe Dreamweaver.

Nope, this is not required but there are people who are clueless, thinking that they're making quite good posts but are not receiving merits, this thought can be a good start.

Just try to write quality posts and don't pay attention to it, otherwise you'll overcomplicate your post because you're focusing on earning merit.

True, you can get in those if you created an interesting one or catches the attention to most readers. But please, only create topics whenever needed. Posting a topic that can be replied on to other threads makes things worse, it increases the spam therefore, decreasing the discussion. That's why i'm also worried this topic can be moved to other threads.

you're right, if a new topic can be replied to others topic it means that topic is useless and that possible to be moved or removed by the moderator.

That's the fact. Recently, after launch of merit system, users tend to write as long as possible in order to catch attention of higher rank users, which in turn might help them to get merits.
I don't want to refuse their efforts, hard works and of course their time spent to those ones. However, it doesn't make sense.

As you pointed out, the contents in the OP can obviously describe or paraphrase in briefer sentences. I think it's enough.

Too long sentences (this one is extremely long) take more time to read (if we can have shorter one, but still meaningful, why not?). It's unnecessary.

As i've said earlier, it is all in my mind. I write posts as if i'm talking to someone. I also think that it's unnecessary sorry but i really can't help it. Thanks for the advise anyways i'll to shorten my posts a little.

The process of getting a merit is almost arbitrary. You have to appeal to some one you don't known because of your comments on the topic. So I agree when you say a good knowledge of the topic is key.

Desperation of forum members to rank up is creating anxiety. Reason why tension is building up especially when ordinarily it is time to rank up but you don't have enough merit to do so.

Your points worth consideration.

No, it is not. Go over your posts and pick one that deserves merit and if it does, I'll merit you. Stop forcing yourself to write for merit, posts like those usually turn out to be forced and confusing.

Try to write posts as you would tell them to your friend, don't write them as you're presenting them to some business corporations (depends from the post) and you'll see merit coming in.

Yeah, I dont think the diagram is necessary for the forum. As I discussed somewhere in the forum. After merit system released, there is a new hot trend, which using inforgraphics to earn merits from complaisant users. I have checked some inforgraphics, some of them only put words from Theymos announcement into those inforgraphics. It's waste of time. There is no denying that authors had put some efforts to make them. However, I would like to emphasize that this is likely a trend, and users in the forum think that making inforgraphics will help them to get merits.

Turning back to the diagram, I don't think it is necessary. The OP of the topic should be write briefly, it looks long-widened. We should describle ideas succinctly.

Anyway, thanks for your diagram, Thirio.

Anyway, thanks for your diagram, Thirio.
Making infographics is not a waste of time since it helps others, making redundant infographics is. A flow chart with these three does not have the same ideas as the infographics posted after the release of the merit system. I wanted to try making one because i'm still lacking, i want to improve my ways. I think there's nothing wrong with trying (same goes for other members especially newbies who're trying to make infographs to help), if it will result to some merits then it means i have done something nice and i gotta keep on doing those kind of stuff. If not, then something's lacking or maybe it just wasn't what other people are seeking. Doesn't matter, at least i tried.

Will be saying this the third time, it's all in my mind. Ideas, words flow as i speak and i'm just continuously writing as i think. Also, Thank you for pointing that out, now i really think writing excessively would be one of the things that i need to change.

PS: I did not made the diagram, i only gave my idea. Credits to topkhai.

I am wondering why you have a lot of words and I think you make it more complicated but the true intention of yours is to know how we can earn merit using a good post. In my opinion,  making a long long post is not necessary.  Make it short and concise because youre wasting the time of your reader with the obvious answer.

Having an effort for typing those common ideas makes the post so complicated and there are so many topics that is also the same with this. You know that this system is new to us and some of here in meta already posted about this. I easily get tired when i seeing posts about "earning merits", you don't need a guide in earning merits, a simple post which is direct to the point is all that matters. Your post is too much, you can explain it in 2-3 sentences.  Also, the quality of your post is important. You look like you are just aiming for merits in posting this thread. The only thing i can think of is you need to fit to the standards of members of this forum so that you can earn all your dreamy merits.

PS. you should've posted on local instead, helping your fellow citizens that is new in our community is good.
Another thing is, you've replied in my thread in local and stated that "if you can say something in a shorter way as everyone understands, why not?". Then, we should apply it here.

Direct hit! anyway the OP seems very active at Meta I think because the merit is more regulated here at Meta Section than to other section like btc & altcoin discussion, and one more thing his activity almost reach to 120 so technically he needs 100 merits to be able to rank.

to OP: ill give you plus 1 so that you only need 70 more merits to become fullmember just dont do shit post.

Thank you for pointing that out for the fourth time, i'll be trying to make my posts shorter next time. It's not necessary but can't i make long posts? is supporting the statement prohibited now? plus i stated that the post is really common-sense and highlighted the obvious answers for those people who don't like reading long posts.

For the nth time. Thank you for pointing that out and don't worry i'll shorten my posts here on out.

Is thinking that i am doing this to fit to the standard of members negative or not? cause if it's negative, why? why do fitting to the standards of the members in this forum wrong? if not, then i'll disregard the "you can earn all your dreamy merits" since it feels like you're mocking me.

I also posted on my local board in hopes of helping others as well. Also, that reply was almost two weeks ago (january 30), replying like this feels like you're waiting to get back on me. I can sense the hatred in this post, or is it just in you idk.

PS:  I never got to answer your reply, so to clarify things up: I have read the title? yes. Do you think one line posts can receive merits? Definitely yes, why not? I said "Not all one liner posts are shit posts" that doesn't mean that i was inferring that your statement means one liners = shit post so chill. Also, one liners can be quite unique in some ways, again i'm not saying that one liners = Unique and i'm also not saying one liners = shit/common/spam posts whatever you want to call it. Stop concluding things so easily and try to open up your mind a little. Lastly, "You also need to fulfill the standards of every member in this forum and this will not fit one liner posts." i don't really know all the standards of every member in this forum, enlighten me. Does this "standard" includes not reading previous comments?

PSS: I'm rooting for the both of you. Godbless.

"Based on my own experience you will earn most merits in meta. So be regular poster in meta and you will earn merit"

Tongue
Is there something wrong with that? I post on bitcoin discussion and other sections of this forum occasionally since almost all of the threads there are getting tons of answer every minute and apparently, if i read all the replies in those threads, there's a high chance of my answer being redundant. If spams would be controlled there and merits would be regulated throughout the forum then i would love to join their discussion. But for now i'll be a regular here btw, thanks for welcoming me couple a weeks ago it made me think that being a regular here is not really that bad comparing to other sections.  Wink

Direct hit! anyway the OP seems very active at Meta I think because the merit is more regulated here at Meta Section than to other section like btc & altcoin discussion, and one more thing his activity almost reach to 120 so technically he needs 100 merits to be able to rank.

to OP: ill give you plus 1 so that you only need 70 more merits to become fullmember just dont do shit post.
Thanks for the merit,i'll be paying it forward and i won't do shit post.

Why do you think there is something wrong with adding that line as step 4? You can add it as sarcastic step  Grin

Isn't this contradiction to your topic?
I mean, more or less you said "be constructive and you will get merit" but "I refuse to post in other sections because this one will bring me merit".  Undecided

hmmm i did not think that through, i was carried away by the hype of everyone saying i should shorten my post. Although you can earn merits through being constructive, there are certain things that would be the variable in gaining one. For now, just like you said "Based on my own experience you will earn most merits in meta. So be regular poster in meta and you will earn merit" the regulation of merits in the forum's section isn't exactly equal and the other, i think, is proficiency in language (English only sections + Local boards = more place to gain merits). Also, we could add a sarcastic step if you want!  Grin

This is what I usually consider when posting and replying to threads, three easy and simple things to consider when posting. This may be common-sense but I hope this helps.

Steps:

1. Pick a topic.
2. Know the topic.
3. Answer the topic.
I agree with your opinion. that's very clear, thank you!
I'm trying to help you create a flowchart diagram "Guide to earning merits", to save time!
sorry if there is less Smiley
success for you !

Merit system isn't fair and this post proves that, look this guy even draw a picture isn't that an effort that should be rewarded?
I will give you merit for this cause I have smerits to give, but I don't think that I'm competent to judge about poat quality, I think I can just notice who made some effort.
1.There are many topic's for picking, so many similar ones. It's hard to be unique ans original when almost everything is been said already.
2. Knowing and answering the topic doesn't worth much if your comment pass unnoticed, and that happens many times to me and to others I think.

1.There are many topic's for picking, so many similar ones. It's hard to be unique ans original when almost everything is been said already.

Stay out of 'spam megathreads'. You are purposely picking threads where everything has already been said, to I assume easily make a post by rewording.

2. Knowing and answering the topic doesn't worth much if your comment pass unnoticed, and that happens many times to me and to others I think.

You should be consistently posting high quality posts. It may go unnoticed sometimes, but never 100% of the time. I checked the merit stats of the ChipMixer campaign participants, and found that most of them had earned a decent number of merits in the short time period when merits existed:

Because it's fun playing with data, I decided to see the stats of Merit for users in the campaign.
Some interesting facts:
- Average participant has earned 28.7 merit
- Median as 23 merit
- The total amount of earned merit is 1666 merit (at the time of this post - merit counts for most users should automatically update) LoyceV's vanity kinda applies here
- Members in the campaign have received 2.7% of all merit given on the forum  Shocked (1666/61278)
- 44 members have reached 10 or more merit earned
- Range: 0 to 138

Just thought it was interesting, not doing anything else with it yet.

taking a break - expect delayed responses

Godbless.

Yes 'cause the topic is all about merits, your statement can be included as off topic since one liner as shit posts are not my point. I just want to avoid this kind of posting. No hatred at all my friend, I just want to clarify things and help you to improve this. The dreamy merits that i've  mentioned to you is also i wanted. I said it to you because the intention of this post is very obvious. Just make clear things up, dont make complicated post that's all. Godbless also, cheer up!
Ps: No hard feelings to this, the personality of individuals here in forum is different.
PSS: i'll merit you since you've answered my questions and effort for creating this topic. Goodluck

Glas to hear those kind words. No hard feelings. And i'll try not to complicate things a little. Although i would like to disagree that my reply was off topic since merits and posts are somewhat related. In line with that, i've made that reply to support your post and just noted that not all short posts are shit posts(because people often generalize short posts).

Wow, so many posts that breach the basics of making good meritable posts.

That diagram is not much use, and is quite annoying, as it slows down reading. Quoting it several times shows what a bad idea it was to include it in a thread. If I had been in a merit awarding mode, I would have left the thread fairly early on, as the bad quoting habits are such a waste of time for readers. It would have been even worse if I had been using a mobile.

For OP, if you really care about that flowchart diagram made by topkhai then I guess you should added it to the first post. Looking by some members said that you make a long post, then the flowchart diagram can be an answer to it. I too agree that your post is too long while it is constructive and the diagram can help some people who doesnt love to read a long post.

Have you seen your post history? Merit was designed to stop users like yourself from ranking up, and it's working just fine!

And judging by your Merit history, it's a good thing you ran out of sMerit too:

I visited the first three pages of your post history and you usually post on ANN, Bounties, and Altcoin Discussion Boards. Do not expect to get any merit from those boards because most posts there are spams. Maybe you need to read more, increase your knowledge and engage in quality discussions in other boards (see also: Advantages of engaging in quality contributions on the forum)

I read this over fast and might have missed some key elements, though I'm pretty sure you didn't include:

- Having a deep brown nose will help tremendously.

and

- Follow the Merit-Sources and post where they post.

Yeah, that's pretty much the method these days.
As you can see, I only have 20 merits, so I don't even follow my own advice.
