I get this at least once a month, and I have to completely redownload the entire chain. It's getting annoying...

Have you tried to fix it?  It may be as simple as excluding the app (data store) from your anti-virus scanner...

The -checklevel=2 thing worked but I'm still switching to Electrum, it's driving me crazy.
