Great, I found the link of your tweet with the Golub video!  However great project, these people think incredibly and their project could be the turning point ... A small detail ... these people think of a different world not the money ... I do not know if the concept is clear ... perhaps too complicated to understand for many...  Come on people!!!

Here we have founders Eric and Arthur doing an AMA for developers. What developers will find is that building apps on Holochain is a bit like switching from checkers to chess. If you try to play checkers in chess game, you won't see the point. But learn the basics game rules and you'll see your world expand an entire dimension. You will see just how much can be accomplished by an agent centric data intregity engine as your foundation (that's Holochain) instead of a Blockchain.

Will it be possible to set up "nodes" without using a Holoport device ? Is there a testnet to tryout such things?

You will be able to run your own hosting, it doesn't have to be a Holoport. The hosting is the way to run a node.
