Bitcoin websites too dependent on cloudflare

My server was having problems accessing the APIs of various bitcoin related sites. It turned out it was because of a problem with cloudflare in the new york area:

Bitcoin websites are way too dependent on cloudflare. Almost all of the major sites are using it:

bitstamp.net
btc-e.com
blockchain.info
blockexplorer.com
bitpay.com
coinbase.com
campbx.com

For a currency that aims to be decentralized this is way too much centralization.

What do you guys think?

Mt. Gox being the biggest example. IF cloud flare goes down Mt. Gox is all that will be left!

What? "Bitcoin websites?" You mean random independent 3rd party companies, which just so happen to offer Bitcoin-related services.

For a currency that aims to be decentralized this is way too much centralization.

The websites you mentioned (or any website for that matter) are not at all involved in or necessary for this currency whatsoever. Payments, mining, wallets, transaction verification, i.e. all the essentials are 100% decentralized. Those random websites you mentioned have nothing to do with the Bitcoin system itself.

However, if you are too exchange-minded (not necessary for normal Bitcoin usage at all, but for argument's sake) then the conclusion must be that the Euro and Dollar are too cloudflare-dependent.

What do you want them to use? Or just let them get DDOS'd?

I personally think Cloudflare is a terrible method of DDOS (any kind of attack really) prevention, they might of started off with that being their goal, but they veered of course when they realised their methods were actually quiet good at caching. Their security aspects of their service are laughable now, you are better off keeping those in house, with your own servers with dedicated (server) resources assigned to it.

If you use it just for it's caching, that fine, but I just laugh if anyone tries to convince me if it's good to prevent attacks on their servers.

We at mtgox still use the legacy HTML over pigeon protocol, you can ping us if the internet is offline. You release a pigeon and it is back by the next summer (warning, rates may be slightly not up-to-date).

We at mtgox still use the legacy HTML over pigeon protocol, you can ping us if the internet is offline. You release a pigeon and he is back by the next summer.
