Sounds a lot like one of our members here in this article.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324665604579079721277783300.html

"Mr. McIntosh, a semiretired chemistry professor in Morris, Minn., is among the growing ranks of enthusiasts who use powerful computers to "mine," in insider parlance, "bitcoins," an unregulated digital currency."

Is that you ProfMac? If so: Congrats!  Grin

Haha good for him! I've always rated the prof as one of the more balanced individuals on this forum.

It's a relief they chose him as an ambassador for the community.

Solid spot there btw as well Wink

Make my day! Say thanks if you found me helpful Smiley BTC Address --->

I agree! Another good choice, in a different way, would've been eve.  Cheesy

He or she would've told anyone reading the WSJ to stay away from all ASIC pre-orders, thereby protecting network difficulty for the rest of us!
Therefore: we win! Grin

I recognise the name and the beard (note I realise the WSJ depicted no beard, but i'd recognise it if they did Wink ).

I think you are correct Loredo. I remember him being from Austin as well (I'm from TX too, so I remember.)

Unless he moved recently, I doubt this is him.

He said he had a house to rent in Austin, TX, so the move away theory fits.

I am hoping to find someone, preferably in Virginia, who will rent me a home and let me pay in bitcoins. I would also be okay with New Hampshire. Hell, if I could find somebody willing to work out an arrangement like this, I'd probably move just about anywhere. If you have a property for rent and would consider accepting bitcoins let me know!  Smiley

Austin, TX
  • BTC equivalent of $1,400 / month.  Adjustable to constant USD rental.
  • Long term lease available, 4 or 5 year preferred.
  • 3 br / 1 bath
  • Bus lines
  • Very nice yard
  • Access to large university, active music scene, home of SXSW and lots of geeks
  • Limited time offer.  Important other considerations apply.
  • Closed in carport for SOHO / electronics lab / mining operation.
  • No windows.
  • Good security.
  • Adequate air conditioning and power.
  • Cheap electricity.  Estimated cost for Batch 1 Avalon ASIC BOX: $24 / month.
  • Fiber optic internet on the pole at the property line.

And notice how the name in the email (Aubrey McIntosh) also fits the name in the article.

And then there's this
The Lancelot is to arrive in Morris, MN 56267 by Feb. 19.  You pay shipping & handling & all expenses to make it so.

Nice detective work. So, I suppose he used to live in Austin, which is where the confusion lies.

If I were him, I'd want this whole thread deleted. I don't want the whole world knowing where I live, especially if he has a decently large mining setup or something.

Anyways, not like where ProfMac lives is a big deal... props to him though for making it in the WSJ. That is certainly impressive!

Ditto on the detective work.  And I was going to PM him to see about going to a certain bar, which we had discussed on a thread a while back, when I go back to my farm outside Austin at the end of the month.

Regarding deleting the thread, the whole world does know where he lives; it's in the article.  The whole world just doesn't know he's ProfMac on this site.

And, yeah, now he's a Bitcoin Expert.  There're worse things in life.

Point is though, he's a worthwhile Bitcoin expert. They picked the right guy, finally! Wink

(Although the bit about Butterfly Labs always selling out of Minirigs...lol. Through the back door maybe! You'd think the WSJ would have learnt the absolute basics of integrity regarding research after the Avalon/Andrew Laurace farce/debacle!!)

Great article.  It is a nice accomplishment to have Bitcoin mining shown in a more realistic light.  It ain't easy like it used to be.

I made this connection right away, and it was confirmed late in the article when it was mentioned:

"Mr. McIntosh has figured out a way to limit losses. Before receiving his new $1,500 bitcoin mining machine this summer, he sold investors 69 "shares" of the rig, worth 1% of its future findings."

Sound familiar?

Awww, he's not even here to take his well deserved victory lap!

Sorry, ProfMac, didn't mean for us to go all stalker on you.

I was proud of you, man!

BTW, I also noted the BFL bit in the article. I refrained from comments but I'd like to add: it's nice to hear that BFL sells out every time they launch something new.

Now if they could only get their product out the door in a timely manner...

His personal info is all scattered on this forum, disclosed by himself. He linked to profiles of external sites registered with his full name, publicly discussed very specific and unique episodes of his past, etc.

I'd say that not being anonymous is not a concern for him.
