it's about time. i do not find the chrome app user friendly at all.

i'm starting to lose a little faith in ledger overall. it looks like they're letting the ledger blue die but haven't definitively told anyone yet. also stuff like them letting their ssl certificate expire and not doing anything about it for several hours are not reassuring actions.

i hope they get their act together properly.

Correct.

Great move by Ledger it's hassle to download different apps for different set of coins that you are storing.

Bitcoin has its own app, others alt has its own alts. It's wasting a storage/memory although it's not that big but its inconvenient.

This might be their move for this tweet https://twitter.com/LedgerHQ/status/960631013415190528

Also the announcement is published on their twitter account https://twitter.com/LedgerHQ/status/966973349497917442

Do you mean the Chrome Apps or the on-device "wallet apps"? As, I get the impression that you'll still need to have the "wallet apps" on the device itself... it is just that the Chrome apps are being removed and you'll have a single application on your desktop (and/or mobile device) that you use to display your balances etc...

Refer to this part of the announcement:
Quote
Install/uninstall apps on Ledger Nano S automatically to smoothly manage a non limited number of cryptos on one device
So, the multiple on-device apps are still going to be used... they're just going to try and automate the process of loading them onto the device for you...

Finally something good from Ledger,I think this will be a great move.Although I believe they are forced to do this because Google is announced long time ago that they will discontinue working on apps for Chrome, and time is come for that.

Still need to be seen how the job will be done,I personally do not expect everything to work well in the beginning.During time I use Ledger they have some problems with servers and now with SSL expiration which only shows that they do not think in advance.

Be aware of that fake twitter account LedgerHQ_admin which is offer 5000 ETH to users, but only if you send some ETH first to "validate address".

I'm talking about those chrome apps.

Imagine that there's a separated app for bitcoin/bitcoin cash and alts, for eth itself and ripple alone.

Refer to this part of the announcement:

I see, thanks for the reference.

Obviously it's a fake one and they are not the only one who has been faked out, I've seen other fake accounts copying famous crypto celebrity like Justin Sun, Charlie, Binance, etc.

Good riddance... I have never really liked the need to use the Chrome app, it's the only thing I don't like with Ledger, it looks like a cheap solution because they didn't know how to create a native application. Need to install firstly an app to install the crypto plugins and use another one to use the wallet, it's like to tinker

i'm starting to lose a little faith in ledger overall. it looks like they're letting the ledger blue die but haven't definitively told anyone yet.

I have recently seen a reddit post about it. No one from staff replied, I can't find it anymore. Two resellers of Ledger hardware included information on their website that Ledger discontinued Blue model. As far as I know, Ledger does not accept pre-orders for that model. I'm not surprised, who needed such big screen, Bluetooth and even battery in device which can't work without a computer? Release of Trezor T might have forced Ledger to create something better. A lot of people love Ledger for huge amount of altcoins available in their wallet. I would rather have a stable app which works all the time or at least lets me change the node like Trezor do.

Today, Ledger have announced that they're releasing native desktop and mobile apps!  Shocked Grin

Well, last year they were saying that they would release new software by the end of the year. Now, it's Q2 2018, I wouldn't be surprised if there were delays. However, I have to admit that mobile application looks great.

This is something I would be interested in.
I use coinomi and Electrum on my mobile phone and would like to move to desktop also.

I assume the ledger wallet would not be centralised in any way like Exodus is for example?

Just picked up some of the features to be offered from the ledger site.
Support of 23 crypto coins sounds great and should minimise the amount of wallets to download and kept synchronised.

Native desktop application (Windows, macOS, Linux)
Multi currencies (23 cryptos including Bitcoin, Altcoins, Ethereum, Ripple…)
Multi devices (Ledger Nano S, Ledger Blue)
Read only consultation of accounts without device (protected by optional password)
    Dashboard view of all assets
Counter values: choice of currency & exchanges
Send, receive, account balances & history
    Confirmation before sending funds
On device verification of the receive address
    Faster account synchronisation engine

It is going to be a light weight wallet. So most probably this is going to be a 'centralised' solution.
Every light weight client relys on an infrastructure to retreive information about the status of transactions, etc.. If thats what you understand with 'centralised'.
Core is the only (independent) full node client. Any other desktop/mobile/HW wallet is a lightweight client.

For a completely independent setup you need to have full nodes (with whole blockchain) running. For each coin you hold.

TREZOR allows you to use your own node in their custom wallet. You can use both Ledger and TREZOR with Electrum which also allows you to use your own node (not to mention better coin control). Is there anything wrong with running, for example, Electrum node and connecting to it using Electrum client and a hardware wallet?

Running a full node for each altcoin is extremely costly. That's why many people choose lightweight wallets. What a shame that they still use web wallets which usually don't give your private key or seed.

Only the massive overhead of a Bitcoin Full Node coupled with an Electrum Server install...

Trustless operation comes with a cost Wink

Ledger is always looking forward to add support for different cryptocurrencies. For example, looks like they are already working on adding XMR, DCR and ADA.

You can check their full roadmap in this page: https://trello.com/b/5nQ1mdzt/ledger-roadmap

As far as i know the application itself for XMR is already done and being tested.
In addition to DCR and ADA, ledger is going to support NANO soonTM (network update followed by application starting to get tested).

Ledger support for nano might push me to buy some. I think ledger adding support for cryptos is a big deal for a lot of them.

I kinda think the same. I feel uncomfortable not storing coins on a hardware wallet.
Securing a wallet which you might want to access frequently is a pain considering the usability you have with any offline storage.
Every self-respecting crypto should aim to get hardware wallet support. Either by the established companies or by self-made products.
This is crucial for success and adoption.

Considering their good reputation with hardware wallet which have good security and good community/customer service, i'm sure this wallet will be favorite among user who needs cryptocurrency wallet or/and don't want run full nodes.
Jaxx and Exodus popularity could be beaten by Ledger if the application at least as good as their hardware wallet.
The app still requires you to have a Ledger.

You don't need to buy a hardware device to use Jaxx and Exodus, so you can't compare both of them with the new Ledger app.

But there's no info whether the wallet give user full access to their cryptocurrency private key or seed.
It should be pretty obvious that you will have access to your seed, which you can use to import your wallet into a different wallet (like Electrum).
