Actually it depends, you should use it if your pc is protected and don't have virus that can interrupt meta mask and steal all your datas by hackers. Hmm,  everything is risky you know, even you use meta mask or access the website, there are times that if you don't secure your account then it will be hacked.

You can trust metamask since it's like MyEtherWallet, my reason for not using it is just I don't trust my computer  It always hangs so there's a probability that I will reformat it everytime so I prefer using MyEtherWallet to store my altcoins or tokens from airdrops.

I think metamask is safe to use as i haven't seen any posts before complaining about their service . It is used to put extra security to your wallet, they private keys are kept in metamask so that third parties can't access or steal the key.
Even myetherwallet.com itself recommends metamask to their clients, so it might not be unsafe for you
