To be more specific, Blockchain (which is used also in Bitcoin) could be used for fair democrating voting process. It is a really good solution but I doubt that any government would agree to introduce it because they might lose next elections becaue of it (quite extreme example but it could apply to some countries). Some countries don't even allow voting using digital devices and everything is done on paper which makes forgery way easier. It will take years before the vast majority of democratic countries will have that solution implemented.

There are other systems which are being developed, but they are likely to be never adopted because elections in the so called western democracies are partially rigged, so there is no interest in implementing a system which cannot be rigged.

There are several embryonic projects in this sense. They seek to create a structure using the blockchain idea to ensure safer and more transparent elections. But still, there is none that provides a robust system that can be used now. Many of these processes use the blockchain to only record the votes.
Now, the governance of Bitcoin is also sometimes questioned. Since there is no well-established voting system to decide the future of the project. It's kind of confusing to understand for who's coming in now.

  But there are some projects like deCreded that seek to offer a governance system. With the users defining the future of the currency by vote. ETH failed when it tried to create the DAO. People place far too much emphasis on the supposed panacea of voting.  At best, voting for an elected representative is a paltry impersonation of democracy.  When you stop and think about it, it's not really freedom at all if you need to have the permission of someone in authority to have an election in the first place.  And having to select someone from a predetermined list of candidates isn't freedom either.  Neither is votes being aggregated and grouped by arbitrary lines on a map, which those in authority can redraw to sway the result.  Once your elected representative speaks for you, they have all the freedom, you just surrendered your freedom to them.  Voting is based on what people claim they're going to do, but once the voting has finished, how many times do the election pledges actually come to fruition?  There's no guarantee of getting the things you believed you were voting for even when your preferred candidate wins.  There's also little to prevent "lobbying", otherwise known as "corruption", so money will always influence policy far more than any vote ever will.

Don't just record votes on a blockchain.  What a waste.  Consensus is better than voting in just about every conceivable way.  The sooner we apply Bitcoin's governance model to wider society, the better.

If everyone had a client that, rather than enforcing rules on a network, enforces laws within a geographical region, each person can make a determination about what those laws should be.  Majority consensus decides.  No need to surrender the decision making progress to some career politician who clearly doesn't give a shit about what you think.  Those unwilling to abide by that consensus can move to another geographical locale.  Society by the people, for the people.  Dispose of elected representatives altogether.  Consign them to the history books as the worthless middlemen they clearly are.

Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency, when we talk about transparency, I think you are trying to say the blockchain technology. Blockchain technology can use in voting in my opinion. Data can be store in a blockchain, it cannot also be intercepted easily by either two of the parties, blockchain is decentralized, transparent and reliable. I think, thee comes a time that blockchain will use in election also.

I want to clarify that bitcoin uses for transaction, storage of asset and investment. It means, bitcoin can never be subjective when using for election. But, the blockchain technology that used in bitcoin can apply the principles of a fair voting system. Due to the capability of blockchain to store a data that which is decentralized, I think an equal plebiscite or vote can happen.

imagine every new law got a public vote. thus not needing houses of representatives/commons to vote for us.

the issue with old voting systems is getting enough people to take part of their day off work to vote, for there to be enough of an electorate for it to count.
but we now live in a technological time where people dont need to take time off to visit a polling station to vote. people can vote anywhere, anytime.

the only issue with technology a decade ago was preventing double voting (eg calling a hotline 2000 times to vote for america got talent)
which again is an old problem that has a solution.

if a population was given a blockchain based ID then blockchain voting can be ethically done and self audited, meaning it becomes free to use to make many rapid decisions more often than just once every 4 years

It's likely that this is possible due partly to the anonymity that Bitcoin strived to incorporate. Without the concept of anonymity, I'd assume many people would fear their data being compromised as well. Furthermore, the community does dictate the price of Bitcoin. When we buy, the price rises. As we sell it drops. This is pretty democratic in itself, but even beyond that blockchain technology is being explored as potential for voting systems as well. It'll be very interesting to see how that goes.

No, not Bitcoin. Ethereum smart contracts can. Bitcoin is a means to transfer value. Ethereum is a decentralized programming language and a world computer. Ethereum will soon take over the voting mechanisms.

Bitcoin principles cannot be used in a voting process. Bitcoin is a market based currency and is not compatible with such process. But behind bitcoin, the blockchain technology is very compatible to the voting process. Using the technology it is easy to track the votes coming in and there will be a transparency in voting and thus cheating in election could not occur.

Not sure if you've noticed, but there's definitely a market within politics.  It's called lobbying.  And that market completely overrides any semblance of legitimacy Democracy may once have had.  Those who make the biggest donations make the policies.  All you get to vote for are the puppets who keep the charade up that the decisions which have already been made were supposedly their idea.  Forget about voting, replace the puppets with a transparent, neutral and incorruptible consensus mechanism to govern society as a whole.
