Yeah - it's all over twitter too - I'm sure somebody else is just waiting in the wings to spin up a new service though, this will likely just be a bump in the "silk" road for the site and for bitcoin.  May be a good time to buy Smiley

It may be a good thing for bitcoin if you ask me, it may temporarily slow a bit, but bitcoin was never gonna get where its headed with a site like that around, at least not one that big that everyone knows about.  Everyone associated bitcoin with SR, at least those unfamiliar with the currency.  So if you had a bitcoin, then you were looked at as a criminal by most, I personally would rather not have that reputation and would like and will probably see bitcoin succeed without SR.

Just curious, how did it get seized.

As I understand it, seizing an onion domain involves compromising the private key associated with it - just like a bitcoin address.

Companies claiming they got hacked and lost your coins sounds like fraud so perfect it could be called fashionable.  I never believe them.  If I ever experience the misfortune of a real intrusion, I declare I have been honest about the way I have managed the keys in Casascius Coins.  I maintain no ability to recover or reproduce the keys, not even under limitless duress or total intrusion.  Remember that trusting strangers with your coins without any recourse is, as a matter of principle, not a best practice.  Don't keep coins online. Use paper or hardware wallets instead.

Wouldn't it be more likely that the owner made a human mistake and got caught somehow?

The worst part about the arrest is how it brings all the compliance trolls out of the woodwork.

I guess they just raided the server in this case.

But astonishing that they go all the way to upload their nice picture. They mark the conquested territory.

I hope his trial (if he gets one) get lots of media coverage. I mean, TV and all. This was no ordinary drug dealer, just read his quotes. It would be a good opportunity to tell all those truths on mainstream media. AFAIK, he has never hurt anyone, but he will probably end up serving more time in jail than rapers.

EDIT: It seems he was a murderer, what would be horrible if true. And incompatible with many of his quotes on Forbes, by the way.

They always put that picture.  Same thing they did when they seized pokerstars and full tilt.

Amazing what the US gov can accomplish while it's closed down. This is good for Bitcoin. People will see that it can stand on its own and is not supported by an underground economy.

DPR sent a message to "redandwhite" stating that "FriendlyChemist"
is "Causing me problems" and adding: "I would like to put a bounty on
his head if it's not too much trouble for you. What would be an
adequate amount to motivate you to find him?"
And then

Later that same day, redandwhite send DPR a message quoting him a
price of $150,000 or $300,000 "depending on how you want it done" -
    "clean" or "non-clean"

DPR responded: "Don't want to be a pain here, but the price seems high.
Not long ago, I had a clean hit done for $80k. Are the prices you
quoted the best you can do? I would like this done ASAP as he is
talking about releasing the info on Monday.

DPR and redandwhite agreed upon a price of 1,670 Bitcoins - approximately
$150k - for the job. In DPR's message confirming the deal, DPR included
a transacation record reflecting the transfer of 1,670 Bitcoins to a
    certain Bitcoin address.
