There is more than one reason why this is good news for bitcoin but the market will always enter price discovery when you take out some of the market. We will see what happens, but for me this is the best news in some time for the bitcoin and crypto technology push.

BTW, tip for anyone with BTC but without exchange.. start shopping on bitmit.net. Most retailers there use 24hr average from bitcoinaverage.

And another one bites the dust...I wonder if Atlantis got wind and shut down before they could be apprehended, hence the hasty shutdown on their part.

We'll, we needed to clean up bitcoin sooner or later. I hate to see such a collapse in price but really- it's better without silkroad. I am surprised to hear the guy running it was ordering hits and stuff. Just goes to show- drug dealers are drug dealers. Hopefully journalists will stop saying its a haven for drugs from here on out.

Yes, it will take a dive, but it will recover... Had this happened a year ago, when bitcoin was at around 10 bucks, then we would see it around 2, but bitcoin has grown a lot in the last year.. its not just for druggies any more.. its much more main stream.. once the panic is over, it will be around what it was yesterday...

In case people missed this article I'll quote a piece from it...very interesting how he got caught. "The government says it identified Ulbricht after a routine border search of a package that contained nine counterfeit IDs. The package was shipped from Canada to an address in San Francisco. When the government visited the San Francisco address, they found Ulbricht there.
The government then identified the primary Silk Road server and obtained an image of its hard drive in July, providing the federal government with a wealth of information about the Silk Road's operations." I found DPR's altoid account, but I don't see the silk road advert post dated January 29th, 2011. The earliest post is from February 25th, 2011, and is about running bitcoind on Debian... https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=3905;sa=showPosts;start=40I suspect DPR deleted the post (wouldn't you?) and the FBI found it by requesting logs from bitcointalk admins. Theymos, can you confirm? Even if he could confirm, he is probably under restriction not to.

Somehow, I'm seeing tremendous increase of popularity of forest sightseeing What an awesome thread! You guys have a ton of great ideas. Has anyone seen Silk Road yet? It's kind of like an anonymous amazon.com. I don't think they have heroin on there, but they are selling other stuff. They basically use bitcoin and tor to broker anonymous transactions. It's at http://tydgccykixpbu6uz.onion. Those not familiar with Tor can go to silkroad420.wordpress.com for instructions on how to access the .onion site. Let me know what you guys think So here we go, first Bitcoin drug store. We're going into deep water faster than i thought then. I wonder how long will it take for govs to start investigating Bitcoin.

Truly pathetic, if you think about it. BTC price was held up by addicts and perverts of SR.
Nope, it was held up by dreams of future value. What you see now is panic, its not drug users pulling out. What bitcoin is worth without silkroad will only be clear in a few months IMO. Between then and now, I wouldnt be shocked to see $20 before it starts climbing again. I'd be very surprised if it hit $20. There are a lot of big investors that won't panic sell as their new shiny business depends on having Bitcoin. I'll be surprised if it hits $90. My guess is it'll stabilise just above $100.

The indictment says they were already watching him because of writing two posts about SR in 2011.
