It becomes pretty obvious after looking at a few factors that the only reason the Chinese are overwhelmingly using the bitcoin client on Linux for mining coins is to solve cryptographic problems in order to unlock additional units of BTC. And that makes sense because resources can be better pooled using Linux than with other operating systems.

This may be one of the biggest indicators that it is the Chinese who may be the biggest miners of bitcoin overall, and that shouldn’t be surprising to anyone who has been following the ASIC mining race.

"...., one might think that the reason why so many users in China are on Linux is because Windows is so expensive to use."

They prefer it for the same reason why they 'prefer' Windows XP over newer versions: It can be obtained for free.

Everything in that article is either a non-sequitur or blatantly obvious.

The article is crap. But I am curious to learn more from someone who actually seems to know what's going on. What bitcoin client do users in China use on their PCs?

Cool! I use electrum too. Bitcoin qt takes way too long to download the blockchain.

It's because Linux is open source. What else would they use? An OS controlled potentially by the NSA?

That is a really good point.

I have no relation to China apart from common border between my state of residence and China, but I prefer Linux as well due to the number of reasons:

1) Linux is much more stable in a long run
2) It requires much less resources to accomplish the specific task
3) Its performance does not degrade with time (registry problems of windows)
4) Its performance does not depend on the number of viruses in the anti-virus SW database.
5) It does not require a regular attention: some boxes I have around are doing their job and I haven't visited them for years (apart from cleaning up the dust from vents and sinks)
6) It is open source, so when you need some specific kernel behavior you may easily implement it without obtaining any licenses e.t.c.

You would ask me if I do all this? Yes, I do. Yes, I am a professional software developer with more that a couple of decades experience. You would ask me if an average user can get some benefits using Linux compare to Windows use? Yes, definitely. There is a number of good user-friendly distributions around nowadays that you can install and use without any knowledge of any computer-related science.

Edit: In a sense, Linux to Windows is like bitcoin to fiat - it is not managed by a single entity.
