I created my Electrum wallet a few months ago and at the time of creation, I jotted down on a piece of paper the mnemonic for the recovery of my wallet.

By now, my wallet has a few transactions and of course the remainder of my funds.

The mnemonic consists of twelve words and I just wish to change two or three of them.

Could someone please show me how to make the changes without losing my funds and the record of transactions? I am using version 3.1.0 of Electrum.

Why would you want to change your words ? Do you think your seed could be sacrificed ? That phrase is associated with your private keys and address generation and altering it will restrict your access from the wallet. The seed phrase is hashed during seed generation, altering the values will mismatch the root hash and wouldn't recognise your wallet.

For now,you can't come up with your own seed as far as I know.If you're interested in the math behind seed generation, here you go : http://docs.electrum.org/en/latest/seedphrase.html#seed-generation

You can't change the seed, different seed will give you a new wallet.
Different seed = Different Private Keys.
Either you create a new wallet and find the perfect mnemonics that you wanted and send your old coins to the new wallet or just keep using your current wallet.

Sorry, I should have stated my reason in the original post.

I wish to change some words in the mnemonic because one of my relatives has seen it. In other words, the mnemonic is compromised.

Make another wallet and use the extended seed feature, this will allow you to add custom words to your seed (make sure you can memorize them) so even If someone see your new seed, nothing much can be done from their part.

You can't just change the mnemonic. Every set of words will generate a different address.

Now that one of your relatives has seen the mnemonic, they can use it to recreate your wallet and spend your coins.

Just follow the advice above and create a new wallet.

Make a new wallet with different mnemonic/seed recovery is best idea, then send your bitcoin from old wallet to new wallet file. Also, keep the mnemonic/seed recovery secure next time.

It appears that many replies to my post suggest that I make a new wallet. OK, I shall make a new wallet with extended seed feature.

A question arises: how do I avoid paying transaction fees when sending bitcoins from my old wallet to the new one? I find it ridiculous that I should pay the bitcoin network to transfer my own money from one wallet to another.

I don't see the point unless OP already memorize the current wallet seed,

Yes, I do remember my current wallet seed. I have it written on a piece of paper but one of my relatives has seen it. It means that my wallet may be compromised.

also it will make the wallet creation or restore a bit confusing for new users.

Well, if you show me the steps, I am willing to learn.

Importing a seed or private key is where you don't have to pay any fees but again, you said It's compromised so that's not an option. You will need to make a transaction in this case and If you wasn't receiving multiple dust payments, you should be able to get your transaction confirmed with 0.50$ fee, If not less.

Make a new wallet with a different seed and not to be mistaken for importing the compromised seed.

Yes, I do remember my current wallet seed. I have it written on a piece of paper but one of my relatives has seen it. It means that my wallet may be compromised.
It depends how technical is your relative or do they even know about bitcoins for that matter.Either way,it's compromised and you must secure your coins.

A question arises: how do I avoid paying transaction fees when sending bitcoins from my old wallet to the new one? I find it ridiculous that I should pay the bitcoin network to transfer my own money from one wallet to another.
I don't think you understand how bitcoin works. You're not importing bitcoins from one wallet to another but generating a new one without having to import the compromised one.Regardless, you will have to pay transaction fees since you're sending money from one wallet to another.
