I don't think so, I heard they are putting new chip on R9 280 and should reduce the power usage.. we just have to wait for now..
There is no such thing as a R9 280. Nothing is listed on manufacturer's pages or retailer websites.

The rolling update of a new chip is for the R9 280X.

The chip and naming progression are as follows:
Tahiti XT (7970) -> Tahiti XT2 (7970 GHz, early R9 280X) -> Tahiti XTL (R9 280X)

I just got a new Sapphire 7970 3GB GHZ verion for $240 two days ago.  Which was $60 less then the R9 280x at the same time.  Grab the cheaper 7970 on a deal.

Wait for R9 280 guys, without the x... it should be even better then R9 290 or R9 290x..

The X edition is better

No sorry the X editions are better because they have more shader cores unlocked. More shaders cores = efficient mining. The shaders cores are whats used for computing the hash. To use the older card designators a 280 is a Pro and a 280x is an XT.

I never trust the spec, the best way to know is to wait for the card itself and try it out...

yeah, buy them both and throw some money into air

I dont understand what you are trying to say...

or just trhrow you money

Why is buying Radeon 280x equal to throw away your money? You need to understand more about it before you comment....

Newegg.  Long gone - they were clearing them out.  You won't that same deal, but check other sites for 7950s/7970s if you're really interested.

I think the R9 280X is going to dethrone the 7950 as the go too Altcoin card. I hope with tweaking it will get 800Khs. I've been able to get 750khs per GPU on a 7990, but the cooling was holding the card from going above 1500.  I got one on order and will see how things go

Why not wait for R9 290x?

when is that out?

and further more, what is going to be the top of the line?

R9 290x seems to be the best right now in-term of power consumptions..

FPGA is better.... coming out soon..

But R280x is way cheaper then FGPA....

used 7950

Hellow!
I have a laptop HD 8970M graphics card, mining on monero (CryptoNote), it gives 430 hashes or 0.3 dollar per day, while consumption of 100 watts, this is 333 W/h on the dollar profit in a day. It has the highest efficiency among all graphics cards (I am the owner of serendipitously)  Wink
For comparison with HD 280x, it gives 460 hashes through consumption of 260 watt
