Submit photos of all your Bitcoin vandalized bills -- and at the forum's discretion -- you can earn Bitcoins for your deeds. Make sure to include your Bitcoin address along with your posts.

Guidelines:

-You must submit a timestamped photo of all your bills.

-The serial codes for all bills must be clearly visible.

-Red ink is preferred. Please include a Bitcoin relevant URL.

Have fun!

What about people just post the photo on this thread, along with a bitcoin address, and people will just donate which ever amount they want to reward it?

Heh, I guess that might be more effective in some ways. Great thinking.

The British Currency and Bank Notes Act, 1928, provides:
Quote
If any person prints or stamps or by any like means impresses on any
bank note any words, letters or figures, he shall, in respect of each
offence, be liable on summary conviction to a penalty not exceeding
one pound.

According to this page, the penalty was raised to £200 in 1982:
Google Answers: Defacing money in the UK

But people do it all the time, and I've not heard of any prosecution. I regularly see UK banknotes with moustache and glasses on the Queen, cashier's subtotals, marks from the counterfeit-detection pens, etc.

Looking at the wording of that 1928 statute again, I wonder if it is only directed at bulk methods (printing, stamping etc) and not at handwriting.

It can't be reasonably enforced. I really wouldn't worry about it.

I recommend against writing "bitcoin.org", as it is not as likely to arouse curiosity (people will figure someone is just trying to drive traffic to a website).

I recommend writing "What is bitcoin?" in red ink in the margins of the bill. That is what I may or may not have done to the bills in my wallet Wink

Anybody willing to make a bounty for a "spray paint artist" to write "what is bitcoin?" in a public place?

What about someone who does some massive prank which advertises bitcoins and makes the news? For instance, if I had the resources to drop off a 5000-ton monolith in the middle of Times Square with "What is bitcoin?" engraved in it, that would probably make the news. Surely there are other outrageous pranks (which are actually possible) that someone could get paid for.

Meh, I've got a good amount of ones, and I have no easy way to get more so it doesn't matter to me Smiley Besides, people pay more attention to larger bills, and there is more room to write.

That's a very good point. People learn much faster, and are more likely to remember something, if they made some effort while they were learning.

I don't like "What is bitcoin?".  To me it seems to be an akward way to bring the subject.

What about:  "consider using bitcoin" ?

I wrote "What is bitcoin" on most of the bills, and bitcoin.org on some others, sometimes both. In the end I started to really like "Bitcoin... a better currency", and "Stop Inflation, Bitcoin.org"
