It's very lame to purchase coins that are in their presale if they have no purpose with their payment systems. Most coins have a low price once they are released for public trading.

Look, there are three ways how you can act.
First two are connected with trading: day-to-day trading (risky option, needs big analytycal job) of just long-term investment trading (quite easy way, as you can invest in the biggest currencies).
And final one is investments in ICOs, it is also risky investment, as a lot of ICO are SCAMs or just fail, that is why you have to analyse projects good.
So, here in my opinion long-term trading is the best option for the beggining.

If you want to buy ICO tokens, they are sometimes much cheaper when they hit secondary markets (exchangers). You can even buy 2x more tokens in after ico periods if that token get listed on a reputable exchanger website. Then trading can be started by you, since you will take the advantage of number of tokens. It's a combination of both.

As a learner, I won't advise you to go into trading directly without proper and adequate knowledge of trading. Reading your post and the questions you are asking, I realise that you should neither try to trade or invest in ICO.
For the beginners is best to invest in some of the well known coins for start before they have a little feel about the market.

Investing in ICOs now is more risky than before. I invest in LA token and the price is under ICO price till now. To climb up the price should have strong community, ICOs that fake news about the soft cap and hard cap will make false information. THey claim that softcap reached but not show the wallet address of investors. Investors can;t track the wallet balance. Fake news about softcap reached will be problem to the price after market laucnched/

Both is good. when you choose ICO as your investments target, you should read whitepapers and searching how good the projects in the future.
Otherwise if you choose as a traders, you must have a good analysis and experiences in the market.

And even if you have good knowledge in it you also depends on the market. So you can just go to church and to put a candle
Of course if you can predict the movements on the market you can earn money. But if you wanted to start, then you should start in trading.
