This was the discussion topic we were having last night, a bunch of gambling friends and one of them an expecting dad. There were counter arguments that his child also would turn out a gambler like he is.

The arguments were that it is his in his gene and that'll pass on to his child, since every one in his family was a gambler.

The counter argument was that the child would make a logical decision and genes won't play any part in this.

Which brought us to another important question what if turns out a gambler would they both play together. Would he be comfortable?

Amid this he walked out and texted me he didn't wish to gamble anymore, so wanted your views on this.

Gambling is not hereditary, so you have nothing to worry about it. Its a matter of choice better to stop it now before your child comes out into this world and saw you being addicted on gambling. Parents must be the first teacher of their children. Either you bring them to casinos or to a good school, btw congrats to your friend.

I've never looked into the inheritance traits of problem gambling--though that's an interesting question, whether gambling can be in one's genes.  I do know from my experience with drug addicts and alcoholics that having kids doesn't keep you clean & sober, not if you've crossed the line into full blown addiction.  I've seen horrible child neglect and abuse perpetrated by otherwise decent people when they're using.  I imagine it's similar with gambling.  The problem gambler might very well love his children, but there's a damn good chance he'd bet their college fund when he's at his bottom.

I have to say this:  If you have a compulsion to gamble, I don't think you ought to have kids with another problem gambler. Same with substance abusers.  Those kids have the deck stacked against them, and they're not given a choice in the matter.  That's not only unfair but cruel.

Like what others said it is not hereditary, Though the environment which the kid/s live could be a factor in growing up. Based on my own experience, We are a family of Gamblers. My siblings and I were in an environment in which our parents, uncles, and aunts gamble inside our home (occasionally) in result our generation were exposed to such activities. As we grow up and have our own family, our parents are even the one inviting us to play. They allow us to do such activities as long as we can control ourselves.

When I became a father, Gambling is still there but I set limits. Did it change my perception? Yes, It did. I became more focus on my kids if before I visit a casino multiple times a week now I even forget to visit on the day I set (I'm now occasional gambler, I set a day every month in which I will play with my siblings).

Having a kid is a life changer to start with, I don't want them to be a gambler as I used to be. I want to break the customary of our family.

As for me, It would be awkward and uncomfortable to me that I sit across or beside my kid gambling. It's just that the feeling of guilt and regret would run through over my head.

There were counter arguments that his child also would turn out a gambler like he is.
This argument is vague not because the father is a gambler the child will also grow as a gambler too? not unless he'll let his kid grow with him together in the casino.
The arguments were that it is his in his gene and that'll pass on to his child, since every one in his family was a gambler.
This isn't applicable becoming a gambler can't be passed on and it's not on the genes so it can't be heritable.
Which brought us to another important question what if turns out a gambler would they both play together. Would he be comfortable?
If the father is comfortable with this type of lifestyle then it's up to him if he's comfortable that way.

Most people's attitude are being control from their environment

But if the kid able to rational enough to not affect by their parent's environment , they are true warrior since it's difficult to stay away from bad habit, right ?
Religion and family really affect on person's behavior ! Those are important things !

Genes has nothing to do with this and if he do able to pass that gambling habit into his child then he should blame those people around them or even himself because he do let his sibling to get involve with gambling. We do know that if we do able to see our loved ones who do engage with it higher chances that we would able to do the same thing. Its the consequence but still he cant able to pull out his son its just a matter of self discipline and restrictions.

There are no gambling genes in a person's blood. Although we see there is a family that mostly are gamblers, it is not due to heredity. Someone imitates the behavior and deeds of those closest to them. When a father gambles in front of their child, of course their child will accept it as a lesson that will certainly be applied in the future. That's because the child sees his father's habits and not the genes.

If by the time you're a parent you haven't stopped that bad habit then you better re-consider what you do with life. Why become a parent in the first place if you enjoy vices that could ruin a family? Was it an educated, mutual choice to conceive? If yes, then seek some help to quit gambling. Don't tell yourself that you can hold it to reasonable amounts, you probably know better that this can't always be true and it's an irresponsible way to think.

Nonsenses! Not just genes argument, starting comment and some other comments can be described with same word.
I'm a gambler and I'm a father. Did a child changed me, of course yes, in many ways. Gambling is just an activity, like drinking alcohol, recreational drug use, partying, extreme sports, there are many examples activities that can hurt or or makes us even dead if we enjoy in them too much. I have many vices, buy I can't say that I'm addicted too much to any of them, I just love to enjoy in everything that this life can offer. I will try to teach my kids to be moderate in everything they do, too much of anything can be bad! That works for healthy things too, running is good but why don't you run 1000km everyday, you would die from overheating.

Is seems stupid to discuss this br. Do you think gambler call or inform their parents while they are playing in gambling site! I am think that you shit mind to understand that parents involved in gambling.
Gambling and sex are same both would not be explain to elderly people. There is no problem on investing the gambling sites when there is no one care your gambling as a big issue. Kick out them and play what and play whatever option you like.

Rofl.  But I think not...  Look at all the broke dads around the world.  Drinking and gambling with their kids' college fund at the crap tables or some casino game.

Dads these days...  Cheesy

Being gambler is a choice and not hereditary. For me it is not comfortable to gamble together of one of your family member and i am sure that source of capital is came from one. This could ruin the life of a family but if you are a father make sure you can limit yourself specially if your son or any other family member is also a gambler because you can easily deliver your advise to make them away in addiction in gambling.

If you are already a family man then you should really be responsible on how you do guide your children into the right path.Lets say we are really addicted on gambling but in our minds we do already know on how gambling can affect us if you are really concern then you wouldn't really like for your child to follow the same steps of yours. You are totally irresponsible if you let them follow you and worst case you are playing at the same time with the same source of funds which will ruin up the financial situation of the entire family.

Amid this he walked out and texted me he didn't wish to gamble anymore, so wanted your views on this.
if you are gambler it doesn't mean your kid will be also a gambler they become of gambler because of environment they grow up sometimes parents are careless they showing their kid they happy playing gambler but most the kid learning gambling at school with the influence of friends like me my parent are not gambler but become a gambler because of my friends.

There would be a lot of factors concerning a parent who would have a kid, but in my opinion, it would be really life-to change. I don't have a child yet but thinking about it, my priorities would change, especially when you talk about your child and the schooling and necessities that you child needs would be the first one. There would be no time to gamble and in everything, the best part of life would be having a family, not gambling.

As for your friend, I hope he does well with his child in the future. Probably be like close friends and gamble together. That would be fun.

Gambling may not be a hereditary trait of course. But if you want to make a model to your future sons and daughters, better to stop gambling anymore. So he did only the right thing.Parenting could be somehow difficult at first but i know it will be learned.Yes it's really a life-changing experience.Hard but fulfilling inside.

About the gambler boy, they have their own future. If dad does not introduce gambling to his son, they will not know the gamble easily. If the father is happy with the gambling and wants his child to feel it too, the father may be teaching his son a gamble, but that does not sound so good. And if the father feels gambling is too risky, the father will prevent his son from becoming a gambler like him. But still the way life is in its own hands, anyone can become a gambler because of their own way and in their own way.

Most people's attitude are being control from their environment

But if the kid able to rational enough to not affect by their parent's environment , they are true warrior since it's difficult to stay away from bad habit, right ?
Religion and family really affect on person's behavior ! Those are important things !
Yeah that's true , I am one of those people who thinks that an environment has a big role, big effect on how your life running , is it heading into the right way or not etc it's really rare case where a kid far from their parents habit. They do usually imitate , take an example from their parents. So you better really planning to stay away from gambling before bad things come in the future and destroy your life later.

I'm in 400,000 euros debt , dont help me , i rather die
