In these cases I would generally make sure I know the dev team and the community first and figure out whether it is a strong coin or not. Also, just because a coin is at the top right now doesn't mean it will go stay like that.

All the coins are cheap right now. They are just even cheaper after the great dip just happened.
I would look at the top 10 coins. BTC and ETH are both great. Others like Ripple and Litecoin could be worth considering also.
