This thread is to announce the launch of my website

www.coinindex.org

Its aim is to list every relevant Bitcoin website on a single page and rank them in order of quality.

The nature of this website makes feedback invaluable - please e-mail suggest@coinindex.org with:

  • suggestions for websites that should be included
  • reasons why a currently listed website shouldn't be included
  • categories that I have forgotten (or not got round to doing yet)

I hope that CoinIndex.org will be somewhere where you would link newbies to as an introduction to everything Bitcoin.

Also, please report any bugs/typos/broken links.

Many thanks  Smiley

Nice!

That's actually a pretty useful website.
You could add faucets, but that would overwhelm the list quite a bit...

I really like the look of this. Very well done.

A suggestion: Might be worthwhile to add "job boards" or something similar as a category, since I don't believe sites like workforcrypto fit into any of the current categories.

Nice!  I like the directory a lot!

If you are looking for advice, I'd suggest trimming vertical just a bit, so it fits on a standard monitor (1050 or 1080px) without vertical scrolling.  Right now it scrolls just a bit to display the footer, which is a shame.

Thanks for the kind words.

I think I will add a small section for the best faucets and also try to find a way to include sites like workforcrypto  - Free BTC & Earn BTC categories could work.

Thanks for the tip, Vod, I will look into that.

Cheers, Otoh  Cool

The CoinIndex.org design looks very organized. Have you added Bitcoin Reviewer yet?

It's a free site which provides unbiased & accurate info on Bitcoin gambling sites. Hopefully, we'll be able to prevent readers from losing Bitcoins to rogue casinos, and scams.

I think News or Reference could be a good category, although we don't have many news articles up yet.

I will find a category for it.

Nice, well done. Bookmarking this, tweeting this & adding this to delicious  Cool This is robust.
I like how you included all the icons. Did you hard code this or did you borrow a framework? Nice work to say the least. Cheers...

I appreciate the support!

I hadn't made a website for over four years and I was a complete newbie then, so it was fun learning!

I used a very basic template (header, body and footer) and then did the rest in notepad. I borrowed the idea for the tables/icons from another site of a different genre - as soon as I saw it I knew Bitcoin could do with something similar.

I plan to update this regularly keeping it relevant and I'm always open to suggestions or ideas.

I thinking flagging sites as "warning" is a very opinion based and not what a directory should be. If the site is clearly a scam then why would you have it on your site anyway?

This is something I was hoping people would debate.

Taking Mt.Gox as an example, I would hate to refer someone to them, only for them to make a fiat deposit and been unable to withdraw it. This is something I feel they should be warned about.

As BFL are shipping and Virtex's ToS are quite clear then I can see an argument for removing those warnings.

The warnings on securities and derivatives can be easily justified, I think.

If a site is a scam, I wouldn't list it - I don't think any of the sites on there are scams.

So this is a review site, not a directory, you are talking about two different sites now. Cause I could say something about most of those sites, that should be a warning. Also people should do their own research, as you claim this is a directory, if it was reviewer then I can see the warning.

In that case then maybe it is a hybrid.

It is definitely not going to be a simple directory that adds every site that wants to be listed. Quality is important.

Of course this is always going to be subjective, but I am always open to feedback. Ultimately I would make the final decision unless other people get involved with the website.

In terms of the warnings - I guess I should come up with a methodology that brings as much consistency as possible.

Well it looks great, ive tested in a number of different browsers & it displays flawlessly. Are you continuing to code in notepad? In my early days (and im not saying im a vertern or anything Tongue) I was using notepad but then I found Sublime text. http://www.sublimetext.com/ Check it out, you will be glad you did. Free version is the full version except about every 5-7 saves on a file you have to decline donating. Anyways good job and keep up the good work.

A couple of thoughts on this. Gweedo, Im not coming at you. I see your point in defining a review site versus a directory site. But if this guy wants to think outside the box build a site geared towards being a high quality directory site and then he wants to add his own research & assessments in the form of a review then so be it. Its his contribution to the community. A good one at that.
I feel as if this is a relevant example:btct.co listed questionable securities but placed a warning stating to trade with caution & to do your due diligence because there was a general consensus that agreements were not being upheld or scammy behavior or what have you.And we all know that btct.co didnt cross the line as a hybrid review site / stock exchange. (i just noticed i reiterated a few things that were already mentioned Undecided)
On coinindex I see that there is a warning next to Butterfly labs. This is with good cause. Is BFL a full blown scam? Well in my opinion, no. A percentage of people have received their purchased items but a percentage of people that have not. Anyways, this has turned into a full blown rant so im closing this  Grin Im just saying nothing wrong with thinking outside the box, not building something typical and adding a "warning" is opinion based as we all have opinions and as a webmaster of the site they are entitled to display their warning.

Gweedo, I just saw that you have a BTC related directory so it makes sense why you have strong opinions on the matter and perhaps a more developed idealogy behind running a directory then myself but my above post remains the same. Cheers gentlemen have a good weekend Grin

He didn't think outside the box, we have so many directory sites, it is an over created market in this community. I am just pointing out a flaw in what he said and how the site works.

*Disclaimer I don't run the site in my sig. I just developed it, and as part of the contract to build it, I decided to put it in my sig. It is actually getting replaced by another url soon. Wink *

Also I again I could care less, just pointing out a flaw in the thinking. This is what forums are about talking out problems and debating views.

Valid point on the over-saturation of web directories as a whole . Google even specifically stated the suggestion of if you run a web directory, you should be focusing on a specific "genre" pointing to strong sites as the OP seems to be doing. I only said "thinking outside the box" because the OP was including his opinion (or general consensus opinion) along side of a site versus a straigh up directory. At the end of the day I guess its just null and small talk.

Kudos on your contract dev gig. Looks good too. Ahh yes the beautiful of the internet and internet forums in debating in search of logic. Will look forward to see you around the forums then and see your new work. Cheers...
