A few months back, these would be insanely valuable. But with the current difficulty... I'm kind of doubting they are worth the extra cost.

I wouldn't pay more than $450 for one.

price of 5870 * 2 and it would have to be based on a good price of 5870 190ish*2? so $380-$400

another question, where are you gonna find one?

I wouldn't pay more than $450 for one.

It saves a PCI-e slot + OC's better than two normal 5870s or a 5970, it's easily worth at least $600 bucks

But not $800 which it seems to have been sold for

How exactly is the ARES better than the 5970? I believe the 5970 basically is two 5870 chips on one dye?

PS: don't be too harsch if this seems to be a stupid question to you

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/asus-ares-radeon-hd-5870-crossfire-4gb,2685-2.html

5970 has lower memory clocks + the 5870 cores are underclocked to 5850 clock rates.

Ares is the superior card of the 5xxx lineup because it's two premium 5870 cores (which overclock exceptionally well)
working at their original clock freq's, & they consume less power than two individual 5870's.

It also has robust VRM's which allow for some crazy voltage bumps. You can push this card even further than a 6990.

It's mostly an engineering sample though, there are only a thousand in existence just like the MARS card.
Theoretically the best mining card available, if not for the pricing ($1200 at launch and still goes for about $800-$1k boxed)

Well thanks for pointing that out to me.

How coincidental, considering ARES is the greek name for MARS.

these cards are 100% rediculous in every aspect... they still even beat many of the new cards... i built a system fro a guy with 2 of these babies and it still beats every quad 580 and dual 6990 system i have ever seen... just shows why i love ASUS so much :p... they still sell from $800- $1,200 ea... i would say that it is still one of the best cards you can get (even with newer generations out)... however, with the price premium, there are much better options if money actually possess a value to you (like it does to most people :p)... i would't even bother with 5970s for mining unless you can get them from $500 or less as it is cheaper to buy 2 5870s and supporting hardware at that point (witch will actually preform slightly better)

to put in simple terms... if money isnt an issue then get 7 and a good mobo and like 4 PSUs and mine away... if it is, then get some 5870s or 5850s... 6950s are also a viable option

6950's are only halfway decent if you can unlock the shaders otherwise you shouldn't buy a 6950.

Until 7xxx series is out in full force the 6xxx series will be way to expensive for mining.

huh? I'm saying 7xxx will make the 6xxx series less valuable. If I'm correct I hope to see the 6870 for example drop about 10%.
