Get yourself a Dell C6100 system, pretty awesome set-up.
I got 3 of them for Primecoin mining.

I'm also pretty interested in building some sort of CPU mining machine with ~50 cores. Does anyone know of a detailed guide or place to find information on this?
I think its funny how many of the first comments were like uh GPU* pls. Lol.
Erm, what you ganna do with so much CPU? I mean which coins are you going to mine?

Erm, what you ganna do with so much CPU? I mean which coins are you going to mine? There are several fairly lucrative coins that are coming out of the woodwork and have serious memory limitations, this is what makes gpu/ASIC mining almost impossible. I am using the term lucrative very loosely and I will most likely be losing money but its more for the experience and fun.

You could always buy a bunch of used 1U servers.

I am also interested in mining future CPU coins. Is there a simple way to get a great increase in mining speed, assuming you don't have a botnet available to you! Or is it just as easy as getting an fast CPU and lots of memory?

If you are going to buy CPUs, make sure they have AVX2 instructions and are overclock friendly like the i7-4770k
Google for benchmarks on Primecoin, Quark or Protoshares
Are you interested in CPU only or CPU + GPU?

Essentially I could like to buy a new PC. Whilst doing that it would be good if it happened to be good for mining. I won't be starting a GPU farm anytime soon and doubt I will ever buy an ASIC.

I don't know if those CPU coin can stay CPU only forever. The community seems to always have a way to do it on GPU instead.... so it is still a risk...

I think the question has kind of been answered elsewhere. Don't buy a mining rig, it is a waste of money. Cloud mine with hundreds of servers when it is profitable, and turn them off when it's not. No outlay and masses of mining power.

Bitcoin GPU or CPU mining is definitely not profitable. Litecoin on the other hand has a lot of potential. I would say a 4 GPU Litecoin rig could prove to be quite profitable. Full guide to building a rig here: http://www.coinminingrigs.com
