Quick, someone point out that he would have had something like $50 now if he had spent that directly on bitcoin instead of hardware.

$9 / 0.04 means that you paid $225 per bitcoin.

When those were on sale, bitcoin was around $100. You paid over 2x more for your BTC then you should have. 
You didn't ROI in BTC terms, and never will, which is all that matters.

Let this be a lesson to anyone who tries to calculating mining profit in $ instead of BTC
