Primecoin is a good way to mine with the CPU (and exchange for BTC). It is quite profitable compared to mining BTC directly.

They say that every little bit adds up I heard that CPU mining is best done collectively on work computers that sit powered on and idle.

Maybe is, but isn't that the GPU mining is more profitable than CPU?

Believe it or not I still be Laptop CPU Solo mining and usually end up with a few of these: PROOF OF WORK RESULT: false (booooo) But it's just for fun while I'm working on the computer. You never know you could get lucky and get a nice surprise. Youre better off using your laptop to mine something easier, like litecoin (still not that easy, or an.other crypto) which you can then exchange for btc if needed. check out coinwarz to find the most profitable scrypt coin.

I'm currently mining Quarks on the CPU. Using droplets from Digital Ocean to make a better profit. Just going to mine a few to keep it in a wallet and hope that it gets big one day.

Less than a year ago I mined LTC with CPU. Now the coins I mined back then are worth a lot more than the power costs! So if you mine some low dif coin and hope for the price to rise it could still be worth it.

Please don't teach people bad speculation. It never makes sense to mine at a loss. The only to mine the actual coins at a loss would be if you cannot buy them (ie have no access to exchanges). If you think the coins are going to go up, then it would be cheaper to buy them. If they go up next year it doesn't matter whether you mined them or bought them (other than maybe a feeling of satisfaction). If you mine at a loss you're spending more $ than you need to (assuming you have access to an exchange).

I am, on the bitcoin testnet. Since the difficulty level is just '1', cpu is still sufficient. We need funny-money to test our bitcoin software, etc.
I'm using testnet-in-a-box (d/l from git) and it's running fine; only problem I have now it trying to get my money - it seems to not be making it into my wallet, I think because they are still in either an 'unconfirmed' or "immature" category.

people with free electricity
They don't exists ! Perhaps it is more appropriate to say: people who steal electricityWhy to assume such a risk ? Better buy BTC/LTC, wait for a good price, then trade for a nice profit! It is more safe too!
