beause it's being heavily abused by scammers. Just look at some threads by scammers who've changed their names 10 times to cover their tracks, because that's enough to fool really gullible people who don't bother to check their posting history... Just look at this guy : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=33350.0Please do something about this !

+1 has my vote, on the other hand I'd still be known as anonygas if I couldn't change my username, and that would suck.

On some forum I lurk, username changing could be done with valid reasoning via PM or Email to the administrator. Abusing/spamming this feature resulted in banning.

I like this idea, anyone being able to change their username whenever they want is a bad idea.

That is nice, being able to change username, didn't even know about this. If I were to change my username, I'd put "AKA old username" in my signature, and leave it there for a month or so. I like how the these forums are so versatile, change username, lock your own thread, delete your own post, good forums, wish it would expand to be able to delete your own created thread, I've got a few floating around I'd like to delete as because I found my own answer to my question.

+1, maybe set a post/rank requirement before one can change username.
In addition to this place a limit on the number of times a user name can be changed in a set period. ex Newbie-none Jr.Member- 1/yr Full member 2/yr Sr. Member 6/yr Hero member 12/yr

Asking admin/mod would be a good idea in any case. They can prevent known scammers from changing their name, and can keep track of old names... Basing your rights on #posts is a bad idea as scammers might have "Hero Member" status (scammers are not actively banned AFAIK)

Administrators can always change usernames by request. Would be a better solution. I bet theymos would change your username in a heart beat if you asked

Always makes me think of a hot water bottle (thermos)... Anyway it seems surprisingly everyone agrees on this (I don't remember when I posted a suggestion on a forum with so much agreement), so come on admins do something about it ! And start booting known scammers please !

This is how it is on the forums I run, and 90% of the forums I visit. Admins should be changing names, not end users.

Done. Now only moderators, Donators, and VIP members can change their names automatically. Other members should contact me. I'll probably ignore your request if you have less than 50 posts (unless your posts are very good).
