This really needs to addressed. Just put a text next to the option and say disabled. People are wasting hours trying to get their avatar up by the hundreds.

Pretty sure everybody's trying at least twice, for instance once with upload once with url. That's precisely 2 wasted trials. Then you think "maybe my picture is too large?" and you try again with a reduce one, etc. Multiply by number of users... that's hours wasted for humanity, it doesn't have anything to do with being smart/not smart.
However, changing the text so everybody knows it's pointless in advance, is the smart thing to do (or just the normal, logical one).
