The mybitcoin.com incident has hit many of the Bitcoin community as well as their friends and families. It could very well be the biggest theft in Bitcoin history so far, shaking the confidence of many believers in this great but still infant project.
This poll should help everyone to get a feeling for the total magnitude of the fiasco - maybe for estimating the impact on the market, maybe to help possible further investigations or maybe just to serve as a clearer warning for the future.
For discussing the incident itself, we already have enough other threads so I'd kindly ask you to keep this thread free from any "I saw it coming all along" and "It's all your own fault" type of comments.
Please feel free however to post the exact amount you lost or any other comments regarding the nature of your loss.
I myself lost a total of 24 Bitcoins spread over accounts of a few not so tech-savvy friends who I introduced to Bitcoin and set the accounts up for them. Since I'm going to reimburse them, I consider this my loss although I keep my own wallet safely encrypted and backed up on offline storage.

Poll needed a zero option so not to skew the results. Good idea though

I changed the first option from '< 5' to '0.01 - 5' so I hope it's clear now. Where's the '<= 0' option ?
Well, if you lost 0 then I'm sure your happiness outweighs your sadness about this poll not having an option for you. If you actually lost < 0 with this incident then I'd very much like to hear your story and many here are probably interested in your real name and address

I don't understand why would anyone store Bitcoins in Mybitcoin? It you want online wallet why don't you just use Mt.Gox / Tradehill to send/receive bitcoins??? I've used Mybitcoins before, but only for payment gateway on merchant sites.. Nothing more.

I'm not very good at security so I was worried my computer would get hacked, and I didn't trust MtGox as much (I don't use TradeHill). Obviously I did not have a very good threat model. Fortunately it wasn't more than I could afford to lose, and now I know to just store my savings offline. I doubt you're going to hear any good reasons because there are none. It was a bad choice.

I'm waiting for the coming lawsuit. The owner of MyBitcoin has to have some paper trail (DNS registration, etc.). I'm sure it's only a matter of time until the people who lost tons on MyBitcoin file a lawsuit. Theft is theft, pure and simple.

Jesus christ 3 people had more than 4K and 1 a bit less. That is heart breaking (trust me I know how that feels). As big of a fool as I was for getting my wallet stolen I never trusted mybitcoin from the beginning and I cannot imagine any possible reason to trust any e-wallet service with large sums of practically 100% anonymous e-currency. It is so damn tempting for the person acting as the custodian of your bitcoins to just walk away with them, and I guess the mybitcoin guy has succumbed to that temptation. Also my sincere regrets and condolences goes out to Bruce Wagner and Ed from onlyonetv dot com for their loss. I hope this further drive the point home that bitcoin security is a serious business - not trolling
