I'm trying to wrap my head around this. I'm obviously new to Bitcoin, and I wanted to test out the paper wallet feature of blockchain.info. So, I moved 0.0001 BTC from my wallet to my paper wallet. Then, I scanned the QR code from my paper wallet to redeem, but what's odd is that the transaction registered as -0.0005 BTC. Now my total wallet ballance is 0.0006 BTC fewer than when I started. What happened? Where did my BTC go? I'm really glad I started with such small fractions, because this is pretty irritating. Any help?

it costs transaction fees to transfer bitcoin back and forth between addresses. Now that you proved it works you can move around your larger amounts of bitcoin to safe storage.

Oh, right! I was under the impression that there were no transaction fees (isn't that one of the big points of bitcoin?). It's just a few cents, so no big deal, but that was pretty confusing. Thanks guys!

There are some good explanations of fees:
