Decentrale beurs
Laten we het hebben over de eerste geplande functie: een decentrale beurs. Hoe ruilen we momenteel munten? Doorgaans gebeurt dat via je in te schrijven voor een account op een centraal platform zoals Cryptsy/BTC-E/Bter en dergelijke meer, en stuur je de munten naar deze instanties en betaal je hen voor jouw transacties. Dit zorgt voor een groot riscio dat ik persoonlijk nog weinig mensen heb zien aanhalen, met dat het mogelijk is dat de beurs wegloopt met iedereens stortingen. Dit is in het verleden al gebeurd wanneer Sheep Marketplace dat deed met 96.000 Bitcoins, de grootste diefstal in de geschiedenis van cryptomunten. De ontwikkelaars van NXT (BCNxt en zijn crew) zijn een peer-to-peer beurs in de software aan het programmeren die ervoor zorgt dat decentrale handel dit vertrouwenspunt kan uitschakelen. Het elimineert daarnaast ook de ruilkosten! Natuurlijk is dit nog altijd compleet veilig en anoniem net zoals bij huidige Bitcoin transacties.

Andere decentrale diensten.

Denk aan wat dit allemaal kan verwezenlijken: complete anonieme websites, én anonieme betalingen, die samen gaan met een anonieme hulpdienst in de chat en messaging functie, allemaal 100% veilig, versleuteld en onomkeerbaar.

Gekleurde munten
NXT heeft een van de meer opmerkelijke diensten: gekleurde munten. Om het concept van gekleurde munten te begrijpen, heb je redelijk wat voorkennis nodig van Bitcoin transacties en dat is iets waar de meeste mensen geen weet van hebben. Met Bitcoin, krijgt elke transactie ouput een gehasht adres gebaseerd op het adres die de munt oorspronkelijk ontving.  Via de blokketen, kan een set van Bitcoin transacties getraceerd worden. Niet naar een persoon, maar de stukjes van een individuele munt kunnen opnieuw getraceerd worden op basis van transactie tot transactie. Omdat dit het geval is, maakt dat het bijgevolg mogelijk om het protocol uit te breiden zodat een persoon een “kleur” kan toekennen aan een munt, die we dan kunnen gebruiken om een brug te bouwen van de virtuele cryptomuntwereld naar de fysieke wereld. In praktijk kan de munt dan gebruikt worden om fysieke dingen hier op aarde voor te stellen. Deze expansie van het protocol is precies wat in ingebouwd is in NXTs unieke code, waardoor het gebruik van gekleurde munten mogelijk is.

Groene energie.
Laten we vervolgens even praten over Proof of Stake en groene energie. Iedereen weet dat Bitcoin gebaseerd is op Proof of Work en dat er duizenden miners over de wereld hashes aan het verwerken zijn, wat resulteert in een enorm verbruik van energie. Dus als een cliënt 1 miljoen NXT heeft, dan heeft die 1/1000 om de transactievergoeding van gelijk welke transactie te ontvangen. De wiskunde hier is dat 1 miljoen (het bedrag van de gebruiker) verdeeld door 1 miljard gelijk is aan 1000, en dus resulteert in een 1/1000 kans.

Extra opmerkingen over NXT
NXT is een “brain wallet”, een heel lang en veilige paszin MOET gebruikt worden om je account aan te maken.

Zoals vermeld, om te “smeden” (aka minen) voor transactiekosten, moet je de software ontgrendeld laten draaien op jouw toestel.

De software is momenteel gebaseerd op java, en closed source. Delen van de code zijn beschikbaar voor beoordeling, mits toestemming van de ontwikkelaars; maar de volledige code zal niet gelanceerd worden voor de officiële lancering in januari 2014.

What is NXT?

Nxt is considered a 2nd generation crypto currency.  With all the alt coins coming out that only change things such as hashing mechanism, time between blocks, starting difficulty, and so on, Nxt brings much much more to the table and was designated this way for a number of reasons.  We'll go over the 5 most important ones.

1.  It is not an "alt coin" like coins such as litecoin, peercoin, and others who have their code based on Bitcoin's source code.  It is brand new from scratch with its own code.

2. It is a 100% proof of stake versus the proof of work mechanism the vast majority of other coins are based on.  This effectively removes a large security risk inherent in most other coins, as now the issue of a 51% attack or other vulnerabilities inherent to PoW coins are now gone.  The biggest plus here is how green this protocol is (not a reference to colored coins) in power consumption, since PoS doesn’t require massive amounts of hashing power

3. NXT when released for production in Jan 2014, will have a very slick new feature called "Transparent Mining".  This will allow NXT to approach Visa/Mastercard rates of transactions.  There is currently not a single crypto currency that can scale this high and this is possible with NXT because the transparency provided in the protocol will allow each user's client to automatically determine who will generate the next block, and so they can then send their transactions to that node.  This will also allow additional fees to be realized for immediate/priority transactions.  An equally important feature of Transparent Mining is an outstanding security feature of the protocol to temporarily reduce to zero the mining power of nodes who should generate the next block but dont.   As previously discussed, the 51% attack is prevented by PoS mechanism.  This transparent mining feature will prevent against even a 90% majority owner of all NXT branching out and forcing a fork.  So if a node that has 90% of all NXT, and doesnt generate a block when scheduled, for network security, the system will reduce its mining power to zero temporarily to prevent a bad fork from being forced.

4. It provides built in support for planned extra features such as a decentralized peer-peer exchange, colored coins, messaging/chat, decentralized DNS, and options for instant transactions.  We will describe these advanced features later in this article.

5. It was announced months in advance, unlike mere hours like most coins.  The 71 stakeholders are responsible for distributing the 1 billion Nxt coins that were ejected from the genesis block via an injection of bitcoin (donated by them, 21 BTC total) into the genesis block.  This is a requirement for this PoS system to work and this distribution is now in progress.  Nxt is listed on http://coinmarketcap.com/ and people are trading on a 1on1 basis in the forums as well as on a temporary (centralized) exchange http://www.dgex.com.

Decentralized Exchange
Let's get into the first planned feature, a decentralized exchange.  How do we currently trade coins now?  Well you have to sign up for an account on a centralized platform such as Cryptsy/BTC-E/Bter/etc, transfer them your coins and pay them for transactions. This brings in a large concern that I personally have yet to be seen brought to light, in that it’s possible that the exchange could just bail with everyone's deposits.  This has actually already happened when the Sheep Marketplace did just that with 96,000 bitcoins, ending up as the largest theft in history.  The developers of NxT (BCNxt and his crew) are developing a peer-peer exchange into the software to allow for decentralized trading which will eliminate this trust point.  It will also eliminate trading fees!  Obviously this is all still completely secure and anonymous as are current bitcoin transactions.

Other Decentralized Services
But let’s not stop there.  If you can have a decentralized exchange based on the peer-peer model then what else is possible?  Well, quite a bit as it turns out; the developers are also building in a decentralized DNS system to compete with namecoin.  Also in the future we can expect messaging and chat systems that, like the p2p exchange, will also be completely secure and anonymous.  Think of what this will allow:  Completely anonymous websites, AND anonymous payments, to go with an anonymous support system in the chat/messaging feature, all 100% secure, encrypted, and irreversible.

Colored Coins
Nxt (pun intended) is one of the more curious services: colored coins.  To understand the concept of colored coins requires a fairly deep view into bitcoin transactions that most people aren’t aware of.  With bitcoin, each transaction's output hashed address is based on a previous receiving address that originally received that coin.  So with the blockchain, a set of bitcoin transactions can be traced.  Not to a person mind you, but what is meant is that an individual coin or pieces of that coin can be traced back on a transaction by transaction basis.  Since this is a case, then if it was possible to expand the protocol to allow a person to designate or "color" a particular coin, then we can build a bridge from the virtual crypto currency world to the physical world.  In effect that coin can then be used to represent some physical entity here on earth.  Property, stocks/bonds, commodites, or really any concept that can be concretely identified could be used.  This protocol expansion is exactly what is being built into Nxt’s unique code to allow for the use of colored coins.

Green Energy
Let’s talk about Proof of Stake and green energy.  Everyone knows how bitcoin is based on Proof of Work.  That is there are thousands of miners around the world crunching away at hashes and gobbling up TONS of power.  Now, PoS doesn’t really involve ‘mining’ per se; it’s important to realize that unlike bitcoin, all Nxt that will ever exist already exists, so client wallets now ‘mine’ for transaction fees.  A growing trend is to refer to this as ‘forging’ instead of ‘mining’.  Since this can be done on a client wallet loaded on a PC (CPU mining), it is MUCH more environmentally friendly and power efficient.

Proof Of Stake Details
Now, on to the nuts and bolts of Nxt’s implementation of PoS.  Its elegantly simple: transaction fees are distributed out proportionally to all users based on the amount of Nxt a client has. What is NXT in the World of Cryptocurrencies?

Not simply a coin, NXT is a 2nd gen scalable crypto offering a novel method of eco-friendly mining and features outside the scope of other simple "coins".

In the world where Bitcoin is king, altcoins only change parameters of the original Bitcoin code such as hashing mechanism, time between blocks, starting difficulty, and so on. NXT brings much more to the table and was designated a second generation cryptocurrency for a number of reasons; five of the most interesting ones follow:

1. It is not an altcoin such as litecoin, peercoin, or others who have their code based on Bitcoin's source code. It is brand new from scratch with its own code.

2. It utilizes a 100% proof of stake (PoS) mechanism versus the proof of work (PoW) mechanism other coins are based on. This effectively removes a security risk inherent in other coins, as the issue of a 51% attack and other vulnerabilities inherent to PoW coins become non-issues. Another plus here is how "green" its protocol is (not a reference to colored coins, that will come later) in power consumption, since 100% PoS mechanisms don’t require massive amounts of hashing power like Bitcoin/altcoins do.

3. NXT implements a new feature called "Transparent Forging" which will allow NXT to approach Visa/Mastercard rates of transactions. No other crypto currency can scale this high; this is possible with NXT because the transparency provided in the protocol will allow each user's client to determine which node will generate the next block. Other nodes can then send their transactions directly to that node. This also allows additional fees to be realized for immediate/priority transactions. An equally important feature of Transparent Forging is a security mechanism to prevent forked chains from being forged by high-stake nodes. This prevents against even a 90% majority owner of all NXT branching out and forcing a fork.

4. It was announced six weeks in advance, unlike mere hours like altcoins usually are. The 73 original stakeholders are responsible for distributing the 1 billion NXT coins that were ejected from the genesis block via an injection of their donated Bitcoin, 21 BTC total, into the genesis block. This is a requirement for any 100% PoS system to work and this distribution is now in progress. NXT is listed on http://coinmarketcap.com/ currently in 6th place and people are trading on a 1-on-1 basis in the forums as well as on BTC/NXT exchanges such as https://www.nxtchg.com and http://www.dgex.com. It is even traded as the Ripple/NXT pair on https://www.peercover.com.

5. It provides built in support for planned extra decentralized features such as a peer-peer exchange, colored coins, messaging/chat, DNS, and options for expedited transactions. Here is more information on these features.

Decentralized Exchange
How are coins currently traded? Well, you have to sign up for an account on a centralized platform such as Cryptsy/BTC-E/Bter/etc, transfer your BTC to them, and pay them a varying percentage fee for transactions, sometimes along with a fee to withdraw. This method has a risk of unregulated centralized exchanges stealing funds, which actually occurred recently when the Sheep Marketplace absconded with 96,000 BTC, resulting in the largest theft in history. NXT is developing a peer-peer exchange into the protocol to allow for decentralized trading which will eliminate this trust point and to reduce trading fees to regular network transaction fees.

Colored Coins
NXT (pun intended) is one of the more curious services, colored coins, which go hand in hand with a decentralized exchange. First though, some background: With the Bitcoin blockchain, transaction can be traced. Not to a person mind you, but what is meant is that an individual coin or pieces of that coin can be traced back on a transaction by transaction basis. Since this is the  case, then if it was possible to expand the protocol to allow a person to designate or "color" a particular coin, we could build a bridge from the virtual crypto currency world to the physical world. That colored coin can then be used to represent some physical entity here on earth. Property, stocks/bonds, commodities, or any concept that can be concretely identified could be colored. This additional realization of NXT's blockchain is exactly what is being built into the code to allow for decentralized trading of real property. Coupled with a decentralized exchange, colored coins become a very powerful next generation currency.

Other Decentralized Services
But let’s not stop there. If you can have a decentralized exchange based on the peer-peer model then what else is possible? Well, quite a bit as it turns out; the developers are also building in a decentralized DNS system and messaging/chat support as well. Think of what this will allow: all decentralized anonymous websites and payments, to go with an anonymous support system in the chat/messaging feature, all 100% secure, encrypted, and irreversible.





Green & Earth Friendly
Let’s talk more about NXT and efficiency. Everyone knows Bitcoin is based on Proof of Work. That is, there are thousands of miners around the world crunching away at hashes and gobbling up TONS of power. Proof of Stake doesn’t involve ‘mining’ per se, so it’s important to realize that unlike Bitcoin exists currently, and like Bitcoin will exist in 2040 when all of it is mined, all NXT that will ever exist already exists, so client wallets now forge (in NXT the term 'mining' is replaced with 'forging') for transaction fees. Since this can be done on a client wallet loaded on a PC (CPU forging), it is MUCH more environmentally friendly and power efficient, and is also immune to CPU zombie forging.

Now, on to the nuts and bolts of NXT’s implementation of PoS. It is elegantly simple: block generations with their transaction fees are competed for proportionally to all active forging wallets based on the amount of NXT a wallet has. So if a wallet has 1 million NXT, then they have 1/1000 of a chance of forging any block and receiving any transaction fees in that block. The math here is 1 million (amount the client has) divided by 1 billion (total NXT in existence) is 1000, so that is 1/1000 of a chance. An even added bonus is that it is your NXT balance that forges for you, not ASICs that requires lots of power, maintenance, and that depreciates in value and processing power. Instead of buying equipment to mine with, you just buy NXT to forge for more NXT with.

Well, guys... I'm going to create a new thread about transparent/predictable mining. Right now I'm reading the 1st part of BCNext's plan that he decided to reveal. It's about a solution of Selfish mining problem. Also he states that this solves 51% attack problem (adversary must own 90%+ coins to successfully attack the network). We agreed that I won't copy-paste the text (to avoid text style analysis) but rather write it by myself in other words, so it will take some time. BCNext was waiting in hope that price becomes more affordable for newcomers but we all have some deadlines set, so... Check this thread time to time, I'll post the link here. It's unknown how BCNext's paper will change the price, don't invest money you can't afford to lose.

But I think the websites nextcoin.org and dgex.com need to be put in order before it's published.

nextcoin.org should have all the basic info on the front page, just like all crypto coins do, not just a forum where people would have to search for information.

and dgex.com is slow as it is, if there is a sudden traffic spike, things will grind to a halt pretty quickly.
