Primecoin has a nice algorithm and is easy to mine with CPU's, but I am not sure whether it will ever be widely accepted. Namecoin is interesting as an alternative DNS root. Peercoin may also be worth a look. And then you have all the smaller coins.

Why not distribute it among the currencies to manage the risk.
50%-25%-15%-10%
50% Bitcoin : Most likely to succeed, least volatility 25% Litecoin : Most accepted altcoin by the community 15% Peercoin 10% "Micro" alt coins- DGC, GLD, QRK etc. High risk but great potential for return
Switch the percentages around according to your risk appetite.

I only buy Bitcoin, it is lowest risk you can get. Other coins are just speculation these get some share on Bitcoin success

I'm still new to this but i'm currently investing in BTC and LTC only. Seems to be the safest option at the moment, from what I've read.

Hey, I've been following the whole Bitcoin phenomenon for a while not... obvious regret for not buying in sooner haha... but I'm wondering where I should start to dabble in the crypto-currencies?
I have $1000 I can afford to play with and let sit for a while if need be. Honestly, I'm a little more attracted to LiteCoin and PeerCoin but would it be smarter to invest in the even smaller coins?
You have to ask what would make the small coins so successfull when everyday might be created new alt coin...

Bitcoin is finding new sustainable value, we will see next week, but I guess right below $1000 for next week. I believe about $700 is good value if you buying

Buy recently boomed up coins and spread your investment. You can profit with each coin at various times. Never purchase bitcoin at this moment. litecoin is ok if it is below 30$.

how high can litecoin go? Any chance they will ever be valued the same as bitcoins? LiteCoin can go higher, but I don't think it will be ever the same vaulation as bitcoin. (Due to network effect and the number of merchants who accept bitcoin). Also, don't put all your money into litecoin, spread it among - Bitcoin and a basket of crypto currencies.

Invest in some mining rig.
Mine some promising alt coins of your choice.
Wait for sometime till the mined coins are traded profitably for bitcoins.
If you fail, you can choose to mine other coin and try to make it profitable.
One investment can make you profitable over time.

If split 70/30 Bitcoin/Litecoin.
I was hoping to do this but put 100% in Bitcoin instead. Wish I'd have spread my investment a little more.
