I would suggest you to invest in feathercoins or litecoins, others don't look so good to invest atm at all.

I have $1000 I can afford to play with and let sit for a while if need be. Honestly, I'm a little more attracted to LiteCoin and PeerCoin but would it be smarter to invest in the even smaller coins?

I doubt, the smaller coin, the higher chance of dead (abandoned) coin

As others have mentioned, its best to diversify your investments. One useful site is http://coinmarketcap.com/ so you can see which ones are more popular with investors. Your suggests are on top of the list!

Hey was just wondering how you got on with this? I'm also looking to invest some monies into the bitcoin! I had thought about purchasing some mining hardware but its only "pre order" and then receive in 6 months and that seems to be the only way to acquire such hardware! But in 6 months time perhaps everyone has 1TH/S so the difficulty sky rockets and you never seen any money Sad

Had you considered mining hardware? or just purely looking at buying coins?

Also the bitcoin seems to have decreased a little in value, is that really becuase of the whole thing with China? Will it go back up you reckon?

I believe that both Bitcoin and Litecoin are likely to increase anyway.  The reason is that there are so many people working on expanding the number of ATM's, exchanges, and eCommerce sites that will accept them.  The Bitcoin economy is growing, and there are more ways to make use of these.

EDIT: 25% investment in each of BTC, LTC, physical silver, and several altcoins (Name, World, and Peer).

I would like to work on development of a polymorphic altcoin that maintains a stable value and is more resistant to fraud.

You should invest in bitcoins after prices stabilize or litecoins when prices go down.

Those two are the most prominent cyber currencies that have the best chances of survival and success.

Or, you can buy some dogecoins https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=361813.0;topicseen

Haha just kidding, but the idea is so funny.

I would invest $1,000 in Litecoin and then if you can cough up another $1,000, put that other $1k into BTC. Then you will have 1.0 BTC plus ~$200 extra in BTC that you can use to spend on some gifts or something and help stimulate the BTC economy.

And when you buy your LTC it would be a good idea to generate a secure paper wallet and send the LTC there. This way they will be safe for long-term storage and you won't be as tempted to sell in the short-term. Hold them for a couple years and you will be happy you did.

Grinderman is really the poster giving the best advice here. If you only have $1000 to spend, you need to spread your investment.

Since it's just a thousand, I would probably be a little more bullish on the niche currencies, though. I think that going for about 1000 of maybe 10 or 20 different new currencies could yield a major windfall down the road. Some people have also been talking about how BTC is the most widely accepted, forgetting that you are doing this as an INVESTMENT, not to make purchases. Best of luck.

DGC I believe will rake back the most profit other than BTC and LTC, if you like an underdog like me.

Hey, I've been following the whole Bitcoin phenomenon for a while not... obvious regret for not buying in sooner haha... but I'm wondering where I should start to dabble in the crypto-currencies?

I have $1000 I can afford to play with and let sit for a while if need be. Honestly, I'm a little more attracted to LiteCoin and PeerCoin but would it be smarter to invest in the even smaller coins?
