I'm not sure if there is some files already in the blockchain,
But I think it could be great if the first document to be included in the blockchain (or the first "official" one if there is some already)  have a strong symbolism.

Maybe some really important history document :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_of_the_Rights_of_Man_and_of_the_Citizen
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Constitution

But i'm not convinced about those, it's too much linked to a specific country, when Datacoin is an universal and worldwide storage.

But i think a book is better :

For example , Fahrenheit_451 by R. Bradbury would be very symbolistic.  ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fahrenheit_451 )
"The novel presents a future American society where books are outlawed and "firemen" burn any that are found, The title refers to the temperature that Bradbury understood to be the autoignition point of paper.[5][6]"
" In a 1956 radio interview,[7] Bradbury stated that he wrote Fahrenheit 451 because of his concerns at the time (during the McCarthy era) about censorship and the threat of book burning in the United States"

The book is about censorship and the destruction of knowledge, two things Datacoin will fight with his permanent and decentralised storage

It could be a sentence/quote too.

Give your idea Smiley

Unfortunately, the first document has been stored already.

This document is:

Code:
SGVsbG8gRGF0YQo=

or translated to:

Code:
Hello Data

It's doesn't really matter.
It was more a test than anyhting else.
I'm talking here about a real upload with a real purpose

How useful is the block chain in Datacoin to store data?

What kinds of files can it store? How large of files can you upload?

Is it easy to upload/download them from the block chain, or does it take many steps?

I'm somewhat interested in this concept.

I'm somewhat interested in this concept.

1. Blockchain is expensive and reliable storage. It costs 50 DTC per 1MB , or 0.05 DTC per 1KB.

2. It can store any file, you need to bzip data before sending to blockchain. You can do it manually, or with special services (see below)

3. Now you can go to https://krypte.net , register here, send some coins and upload files. If you want to do that via wallet (Linux version), you should look into instructions http://datacoin.info/index.php?id=technical-details
This feature will be implemented into wallet GUI soon.

Bidji, you gave excellent idea. It will be very helpful and symbolic to get such document into blockchain and announce info about it via different news portals.

For now, it's not really easy to do because the coin is new.
But there is a lot of tools coming, like : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=365165.0
This would make it really easy to upload and download data from the blockchain.

A copy of the first Matrix film.

Even is it's not impossible, it's not really convenient to upload files that large on the blockchain. Text is really where it's at, and photo too, but for videos it's too much.

Let's wait for the new envelope protocol before uploading the matrix Wink

... you need to bzip data before sending to blockchain...
Well, in fact you can upload any kind of document to the blockchain, it is obviously advisable to compress it in some form (bzip, zip, rar, 7z, whatever) before uploading because of the fees.

Yeah, bzip is not restriction, but it really helps.

Matrix was a little joke, ofcourse it's a bit too large (for now  Grin). Fahrenheit 451 is an excellent idea. Catch-22 would fit very well too.  Cheesy

You don't actually need to bzip it, but you would be wasting transaction fees if you do not compress the data.

There is a lot of potential with this coin.  You can use it to store html files that can then be processed directly from the blockchain utilizing a special client.

You would need to store the data in a certain way.

Something like:

Code:
{**TITLE:test.html**}
<html>
<head>
</head>
<body>
asdasd
</body>
</html>

Bzip that and store it and someone could easily extract the file from the chain, parse the title using the identifier above, and display it.  Really the possibilities are endless.

Other ideas that you can use it for are private messages encrypted with a certain key.  Then the two clients can send untraceable encrypted messages that get decrypted by the clients at either end.

I agree. I think free (copyright expired) ebooks should be stored early on. I would donate 10 DTC to the unofficial team if someone took it up.

Candidates (bzip compressed 50-200 KB / book):

Moby Dick: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2701

Beowulf: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/16328

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/11

Les Misérables: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/135

Radix - just imagine

I have just uploaded a poem (encoded in html without compression).
