This makes no sense financially and if it's going to be hosted in a data center it should be using specialized GPU mining racks that can run more GPUs per motherboard/CPU.  You really need open racks and to use PCI-E riser ribbons if you want to build a GPU mining rig, using a desktop computer case makes no sense especially because heat is a huge issue with scrypt mining.  Also to be honest, scrypt mining is VERY finicky compared to SHA256 mining, you're talking about constant lockups and crashes if heat isn't perfectly controlled.  The amount of time that's going to go into keeping everything running is going to be much higher than with bitcoins and given how the Bitfury towers already caused a ton of problems I'm not sure the coop has enough manpower to keep racks of scrypt miners up and running.

The new facility comes with me also having hired 6 more people to help out. I am currently training them right now.

Using what cards?  I find it is a pain in the ass sometimes trying to get different cards working together.  I had a 5830, 2x5850, and a 6950 in my rig and I had to try a lot of different versions of Catalyst and cgminer before they all wanted to work properly.

Then I tore that apart and am using 4x5850s and working on getting the parts for my other rig... put the 6950 in my sons computer so he can play stupid FFXIV

I run 7970's right now and will be building my R9 290 rig as soon as the cards come. My 7970 rigs are all based on the same hardware from the mobo up so after I built the first the others were just imaged which is much quicker to setup.

I plan on water cooling everything on the R9 and making it my mining showpiece

Nice.  I bet it isn't hard getting the newer cards to work together, but mix-matching 58xx, 68xx, 69xx, 78xx, etc. seems to be problematic at times.  I like making rigs with all 5850s though.  They are really energy efficient, and I can usually find them for $60-80 on Craigslist... just gotta hunt for em.

I'm working on raising some funds to get in on this group buy.  I'm not tech savvy enough for my own setup, so this should be a good fit for me and I expect the LTC value to increase as cryptocurrencies become more well known to average joes like myself.

I stood up a 4x R9 280 rig yesterday.  Took about $1900 in parts and a couple hours work but I admit I have a pretty decent knowledge of PC building.  Without any real tweaks I'm hashing away at ~2800.  So less than $1 a hash.  You guys are asking basically double that plus the hosting and management fees and it's not coming online for a few weeks as the LTC difficulty really begins to soar over the next couple months.  I think that you will struggle to ROI on this.  Yes the hardware resale might ultimately push it into profitability but that's going to be a long road.  I am not saying they won't do a great job with managing this as they do a great job with all their GBs but it just might not make financial sense.

Because the 280s are better from a cost/performance standpoint   Same reason everyone wanted 7950s.  Don't get me wrong the R290s are nice, they just are power hogs and you don't get the same ratio out of them.  The cost of building with 290s makes it harder to ROI because the increased hash they give doesn't outweigh the premium you pay for them.

The 280x's are better cards. They only get 100kh/s less and they are $100-200 cheaper. They also use less power and produce less noise/heat.

May I ask where did you purchased your R9 280x from? And what is your ROI estimate on this system?

I bought them back on Black Friday when Newegg and others were blowing them out.  I actually have 3 more new in box sitting on the shelf that I bought for a friend who didn't want them so I will be selling them off.  ROI if LTC price holds reasonably steady should be 45-50 days.

The comments are right, the 280x is a much better choice than the 290x.

It's much better from a khash per watt perspective to build a mining rig using 280x's as well as from a $ per khash perspective.  Which is not so coincidentally why all the suppliers are out.  It's also worth considering trying to acquire 7970 or 7950 cards as the 7970 and 280x are actually the same chip and the 7950 is a close second in mining favorability.  I think a GPU mining rig could be a good idea but again this setup you guys have proposed is just not the right way to go about it, I know the 280x's are impossible to obtain right now but really I would be patient about this, with all the crypto currency prices tanking these cards will be much easier to obtain soon and in the meantime you can do more planning on how to build a serious crypt mining rig.

If you want some suggestions on how to design a high end scrypt miner I'm sure we'd be more than happy to help with the build.
