Promoting or being involved in a one-way trip to the Red Planet is prohibited in Islam, a fatwa committee under the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowment in the UAE has ruled.

“Such a one-way journey poses a real risk to life, and that can never be justified in Islam,” the committee said. “There is a possibility that an individual who travels to planet Mars may not be able to remain alive there, and is more vulnerable to death.”

Whoever opts for this “hazardous trip”, the committee said, is likely to perish for no “righteous reason”, and thus will be liable to a “punishment similar to that of suicide in the Hereafter”.

The committee, presided by Professor Dr Farooq Hamada, said: “Protecting life against all possible dangers and keeping it safe is an issue agreed upon by all religions and is clearly stipulated in verse 4/29 of the Holy Quran: Do not kill yourselves or one another. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful.”

Late in April 2013, Mars One, a Dutch company, invited volunteers to fly and live on the Red Planet, but there is no technology so far that would enable a return trip from Mars to Earth. The company is planning the first such trip to Mars in 2023 and another crew every two years afterwards with the goal of establishing a permanent human colony.

The applicants must be aged between 18 and 40 years and in good physical condition. They have to pay only $38 for the trip. Thousands of volunteers, including some 500 Saudis and other Arabs, have reportedly applied for the mission which costs $6 billion. The committee indicated that some may be interested in travelling to Mars for escaping punishment or standing before Almighty Allah for judgment.

There is nothing over there, as far as we know "to get" over there. "Suicidal tendencies" were describing people crossing the oceans, fighting marine monsters. But the risk back then made sense as people were looking for land, gold, spices, and other rare merchandises. If we find some kind of rare Martian minerals for our iphone 7, then going there will be a no-brainer, moving from "crazy-insane" to "smart entrepreneurial spirit".

I don't see why this project is not feasible. All it needs is a proper budget and help from scientist all around the world. This is history in the making. History that will be remembered by mankind even 10,000 years from now. This is the first step of mankind to became interstellar species. By not living on other planets we are like putting our eggs in one basket and it only takes 1 asteroid to pry us all to extinction.


Most of the problems right now on space travel is.

Radiation - This can be address by using water and other supplies to block the radiation. Moon materials can be used also as a radiation shield to limit the radiation intake to a acceptable levels.

Micro Gravity - This can be address by using rotating space craft or just the rotating only the living chamber of the space craft to create artificial gravity.

Food - This is the hardest when they reached mars. They cannot expect a supply of food from earth. So the new mars inhabitants must be able to grow food on their on own using the mars resources. They could food like they grow marijuana here on undergrounds.

Water - The must able to find sources of water of mars to survive. I think the best source of water is in the poles on its ice form or  maybe there is liquid water beneath it.

Energy - I think they can use solar energy or some nuclear energy for the mean time.

Air - I think the new mars inhabitants would living in in closed environments because 95 percent of mars atmosphere is carbon dioxide.

Radiation, Dust and Climate in Mars - I think it is best if they lived underground for now. They would be safe from radiation, dust and from the temperature extreme fluctuation.  


Right now we have the technology to  terraform mars to make it livable for our species 100 from now all its needs is our united political will.

Colonization of new worlds is our future, but I don't envy first people to be guinea pigs. I have seen to many movies about mars colonies that end terribly wrong.

There are a lot of reasons why it should not be done but there are a few strong ones for it. Those would be:

1. An insurance for humans as a specie (a lot of things can go wrong down here from a deadly virus to a killer asteroid and on a long run the question is just when that/those will happen).

2. An opportunity to start all over again making more ethical systems for us (bitcoin like currency included).

3. Connected to point 2 - more people will have the chance of feeling self-accomplished even if the beginning will be very harsh.

4. An opportunity for us to hear and see some different breaking news (hopefully good) than what we see now daily.

5. An excellent opportunity to prove that can be done with very limited resources.

6. To stimulate the drive to go forward, achieve "the impossible".

7. To make a desert like world flourish (even if there are some serious obstacles terraforming is possible).
