These little things were once used as money  Wink

Someone should make a shell coin with 5 second blocks 1 coin per block and infinite coins

Sea shells that you could go down to the beach and find every 5 seconds were traded at one time Why couldn't the model work for coins

Most businesses won't take BTC unless it can be easily switched on using their existing POS system. As much as I love buying stuff IRL with bitcoin, at the moment, it doesn't make business sense to spend time learning about Bitcoin, drop cash on a parallel POS system, and train employees, all in an effort to appease a minuscule fraction of their customer base. What needs to happen first is to make Bitcoins easier to comprehend, secure, and use online.

This.  I think we'll see slow adoption "in real life" physical stores because of this.  The costs are too high the moment for all the reasons mentioned above to only capture a small market.  With time and greater adoption though, it will happen...eventually.

To the original poster, you could use bitcoins in the mall right now! Through gyftcards! Smiley

In Canada there's a virtual exchange that offers a debit card...

- You trade bitcoin for Canadian dollars
- They send you a debit card with the Canadian dollars on it
- You can spend in a store

Ok, you're not spending bitcoin directly but it's really close - here's a video that explains it...

That's already happening with payment processors like bitpay. Just give things time. 6 months noone new about bitcoin and you expect for everyone to jump on the wagon already?

I think you're exaggerating the cost or problems of implementing Bitcoin as a payment system. It would be no harder or difficult than training an employee to use the current chip and pin card devices. 'Contactless' card payments are now being rolled out and I can't see how paying with Bitcoin would be any different from that. In fact, paying with Bitcoin will be cheaper and quicker for the merchant as they don't have to pay creditcard fees etc. Obviously it's still early days for Bitcoin, but the benefits are there to be seen by all and all we need to do is wait for gradual mainstream acceptance which is happening slowly but surely already.

Yes, using Bitcoin will become simpler and easier. With every new technology it takes a little while to get used to.

I hope we get some Bitcoin ATM machines here in the uk next year. That would really help promotion and legitimise it with the public.

I'm hoping for this also. I haven't heard any definite plans for any, but surely a few must pop up in 2014.

Think there's a few other manufacturers too. $5,000 each for the lamassu ones.

I 'm not sure about legitimising it. So far whenever bitcoin gets into the radar of authorities bad things happen   Sad

Eventually, the businesses might realize they should keep the BTC instead of turning it into fiat. This is impossible until other businesses that they rely on start using fiat, etc. hmm...

it would be nice for this to happen, but most likely there will be some form of government resistance. i hope the moment that big brother decides it wants to slam the hammer down, it'll be too late to stop the momement; only slow it down.
