Wallets require very long time to start - is it normal?

Hi!

My BTC-wallet for example needs about two minutes after the GUI is ready for synch. Is this normal?
The start screen stays a long time at "verify blocks", after the "real" GUI comes up.

Unfortunately it is normal, if you use Bitcoin-qt. If you use a light wallet like Multibit or Armory, it is not.

Perhaps you could use a disk defrag program to improve performance of your \users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin folder

Yes its normal, at least I have it as well. I suppose with a SSD i would go faster.

you're probably using Bitcoin-Qt which is more detailed and takes longer to load, I'm using it too
I don't mind waiting 2 minutes as I don't usually need to use my wallet so fast or urgently, if you do
you can download multibit, he loads faster but has less options

Electrum is a good wallet too.

It's not the wallet that takes long to start but the full P2P node.
If a full node is too heavy you can use one of the lightweight wallets.

Just download one of the lightweight wallets like multibit and electrum. There is absolutely no need to run bitcoin-qt as your wallet.

The lightweight programs does not check if it follows the real blockchain, so it just assumes that the one most people follows is the correct one.
But for most people a lightweight will be enough (and easier!).

just about every coins wallet has a lengthy loading time. I suspect it has a fair bit to do with the size of the blockchain for that coin.

the one's I find take the longest are DGC and CGB. Both can take upwards of a minute to load

Multibit or Electrum, your choice. They are lightweight clients, that means the wallet is still on your pc, like with bitcoin-qt so it is secure.

Yes, it's normal even for alt-coins because they all use the same open-source code.
