https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=37402People from certain countries can't access bitcoin.org nor download the client because SourceForge has decided to play U.S. puppet & ban all IP ranges from those countries. Bitcoin availability shouldn't be bound to a geographical location or limited by the actions of an oppressive regime. That's like the Tor project voluntarily blocking Chinese IP's because they don't want to get in 'trouble'.

Well, I just hope you don't get half the bashing I got on the thread i started about that same subject https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=37687.0But at least these kind of threads will show us that some persons here can think for themselves, while others are just brainwashed sock puppets who can't see past their own belly. Respect for you, for trying to do what is right. Cheers!

I don't think this is a really major concern since the sources are available and changing your IP is pretty easy with Tor.
However I understand that some people might not be proficient enough to do that. If people express some interest I'll host copies of the binaries at bitcoin-central.net

It's not that easy to change your IP with Tor when they block all public Tor nodes. And it's even a bigger pain to download 8MB using Tor. The internet itself, in those countries is slow, and Tor is even slower.

I wasn't even going to talk about the blockchain because to download it people would need to manage to finish the download of the client Even opening a webpage with 150KB is a pain...

No idea, but if they do, the servers will move

Well, I've downloaded files as large as 80MB over TOR (lol Belarus). Basically, it's perseverance+coffee. Dling the chain will take lots and lots of coffee.

Someday, bitcoin clients will simply bootstrap their chain using the bittorrent protocol

Someone should make a site that just displays a random mirror, one at a time. Maybe forces you to solve a CAPTCHA to see it.
Kinda like the Tor Bridge Relay service. That way it is very very hard to block them all.

Why arn't we doing this right now? I've always wondered why we boot strap with IRC protocals. Can someone say DDoS freenode... Bring down the network?

Probably because it's not easy Also IRC is used for bootstrapping connections, bittorrent has central points of failure too, the trackers.

And what about instructing everybody on how to check the file checksums?
You know, dumb proof instructions, screenshots and all, so any pop can do it.
That would be great.
Thanks!

I thought the blockchain was downloaded from peers in the network and not from a central server...

Probably because it's not easy Also IRC is used for bootstrapping connections, bittorrent has central points of failure too, the trackers. How does DHT work? Could something like that be implemented for Bitcoin?
