Server Power Supply Interface Board - for standalone miners and GPU rigs

Schematic currently only exists on paper. I'll need to modify a bit to accomodate external fan speed control.

Gonna be delivering four boards to bobsag3 within a few days for testing.


For those guys thinking of building multi-supply cases, I'm thinking of cooking up a simple board with thermistor input for fan speed, and LED indicators for attached supply function. Maybe output voltage monitoring and a current measurement input pin to track power use, if anyone wants to implement a laughably high-current-handling sense resistor feedback in their case. OR - I'll see how much trouble it'll be to implement a high-side sense resistor and amplifier on the board, so you can monitor per-supply load and make sure the parallel is working right. Should be fun.

as you add stuff, please keep a no frills one psu only board available for simple hobby miners and a higher functionality board for those who want all the goodies.

Sounds good. I'll probably make one board flexible enough that the "options" will depend on parts population. Like having slave boards in a backplane won't require manual switches (hardwired jumpers instead) because of all-external control, and standalone boards could have the option for current sense or just straight power. Even the "all frills" board wouldn't be terribly technical - actual voltage and current monitoring would have to be done externally, as the board would basically just have sensor outputs.

will this work with *all* dell poweredge PSUs? It seems there is a long list of models with the same connector.

Anything with a s24p6 connector on a 0.1/0.2 inch pitch, signal-compatible. I'm testing with a Z750P so anything pin/signal compatible with that should work just fine.

Nothing has changed re: mated connector.  Everyone is being pretty unresponsive due to holiday, and I don't really blame them.  I've found a couple other angles to pursue, but I'm not really expecting a response from anyone until early next week, and I wanted to give you a status update.

From FCI I've gotten a fairly stamped response "I'm talking to a product engineer, hopefully I can update you before Dec 31st". Molex says they don't see anything in distributor inventory and tech support might be able to help me find a compatible replacement.

These look to be the closest equivalents, but I haven't checked every single measurements on the datasheet yet.  I also can't find any stock on them anywhere.

I also had some false leads on the 51761 family, but the power connector spacing was incorrect. Still looking.

I snatched up a few of the dps-2000bb power supplies, I'd like to get a few of these boards from you if they are compatible, or at least know where you get the main connector from, I can make my own boards on protoboard.

Yeah the best I can do right now is a 51761 modified, that's what the current prototype is using. The standard spacing for those is 0.25" on the power sockets, so I gotta basically hollow out all the pastic and mount the blade sockets to the PCB on 0.20" without any support.

Pontiac, where did you get those lovely pci-e power connectors?

That is the same P# I ordered as well. Works good, but needs a custom pcb due to the different pin pitches. I was able to cram it into a regular proto board with some tweaking  

The 6 pin mini-fit jr connectors I bought are not pci-e, one pin is square, but the female socket on the gpu is rounded. These came from a batch of GPUs. Once I realized the mistake in connectors I ordered I cannibalized the 4 pin molex adapter cables, using new pins from digi. Most cards I've ordered come with them. The +2 P/N is wm7263-nd, it fits properly but is missing the little ridges that make it mate on the proper end of the 6 pin connector.  

Frozencpu.com sells the proper 6 pin, but I haven't found the right one on digi. You can see the two types, check to make sure you get the right one. I've never seen a supplier for the proper 8 pin pci-e plug. I lucked out and my dual-x gpus came with dual 8 pin gpu power adapters.

Due to the design of the server/tower/whatever these PSUs came from they never came with internal fans. The entire chassis had engineered cooling to run on one huge fan or something. I took one apart to check out the heatsinks and figure out the best orientation for a fan, pretty sure I'm going to go with two nice delta fans while running pairs of these stacked so air flows through horizontally. If all my gpu's come with pci-e power adapters this will be a super cheap power supply!

Yeah, I was just going to stack them up and cover one side in fans. I'm just going to make bulk leads, soldered directly to the terminals of the blocks I've got coming in. Cheap and dirty, I need to set up four of these now and four more in a week or two. I'm just happy to get major power supplies working on my 240 circuits.

Ok, yeah, the 51761 and 51762 series work well for stuff with a 0.250" pitch on the power connectors, and they're generally in stock...  we're still chasing down the 0.200" version.  We've got part numbers now (51915 series); it's just a matter of finding something that actually exists, instead of phantom active status parts with no stock anywhere in the world and not insignificant minimum buys.  One of my suppliers responded this morning, and they're looking into it for me, but it's still an 'everyone is on vacation until next week' sort of deal.

It sounds like we've got quite a few power supplies that people want to support, all with different interfaces.  We should probably put together a list of the most popular ones so we don't miss anything.
