Hi,

I don't know if it's just me (I doubt it's just me as I have a 50mb connection), but bitcointalk.org is SOOO SLOOOOWWWW!

Are there plans to improve the servers? I don't think they can handle the current amounts of traffic...

Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

I don't perceive it as being overly slow. Sometimes the server is doing things that cause it to become slow for a few minutes, but on average it seems to be acceptably fast.

Doing so much as a simple backup would easily tank the server (take it the database is 10-20Gb) for a few minutes.

There is a backup once per day, which basically takes down the forum for 5-10 minutes. I've never actually been on the forum while this was running on its own, though: I've only seen it when I've manually created the backup.

There's also an update of membergroups every 10 minutes that slows things down for a few seconds.

I wouldn't call it slow, but it is perceptibly slower. I was wondering one thing: would it be acceptable to you to change the configuration from "https://bitcointalk.org" to "" (empty string)? This way those who aren't that security concerned could use "http://bitcointalk.org" to browse this site. The way it works right now is: one can get into the forum via HTTP, but then any use of the internal forum links make it switch to HTTPS.

Obviously this has security implications, it trades off the better local cache hit ratio for less security.

I'm fine with less security, but many other readers may be surprised and unhappy with it.

What do you think?

Some times (several times each day) it hangs for maybe 20-30 seconds before the page suddenly loads, so I don't think it's because of the backup. If it's possible it might be a good idea to run it with ionice -c 3, though.

FWIW, pages load fairly slow for me as well it seems. Like anywhere from 5-15 seconds delay to start loading a page. But sometimes it runs fine too.
