I think that alt coin mining and then trading to Bitcoins is the way to go if you're willing to invest some money and want to make quick profit. Another way is to collect smaller amounts of Bitcoins from faucets and offers.

If you are in Vancouver just head down to the Waves Coffee shop on Smite and Howe with the cash amount that you want to purchase in Bitcoin.
There's usually a Bitcoiniacs employee there to assist you with getting started.
