It's crazy how this is driving down the bitcoin price... It's at $8 now!
Or is something else going on?

Hurricane should be driving the price down. There is nothing else going on right now other than people working on their projects, and speculators speculating dooms day ! LOL

Shouldn't the difficulty drop? or a few states losing power for a few days won't matter?

It's two weeks between difficulty adjustments (seems a bit long to me, but whatever.)

Bitcoin is the ultimate freedom test. It tells you who is giving lip service and who genuinely believes in it.
... ... In the future, books that summarize the history of money will have a line that says, “and then came bitcoin.” It is the economic singularity. And we are living in it now. - Ryan Dickherber... ... ATTENTION BFL MINING NEWBS: Just got your Jalapenos in? Wondering how to get the most value for the least hassle? Give BitMinter a try! It's a smaller pool with a fair & low-fee payment method, lots of statistical feedback, and it's easier than EasyMiner! (Yes, we want your hashing power, but seriously, it IS the easiest pool to use! Sign up in seconds to try it!)... ... The idea that deflation causes hoarding (to any problematic degree) is a lie used to justify theft of value from your savings.

It's not a Hurricane.Just the 5970 I ordered for bitmining.
Note:I do not accept responsibility for BTC difficulty increasing, loss of life or for other natural disasters.

Looks like the "instant" is taking a plunge. http://dot-bit.org/tools/nextDifficulty.phpAlso I presume the price drop lately could affect this. And/or maybe people are selling before the storm?

This should be in Bitcoin Discussion or Off Topic, but not economics.

Irene was boring. The flooding situation is really bad and quite serious in places, but Irene didn't have sustained winds over 60mph at any time during landfall.
I live where sustained winds over 60mph happen year-round and we regularly get 80mph wind gusts. Hooray for being a mountain man.
This hurrcane was an overhyped media sensation - its biggest threat is that the northeast won't take a category 3+ landfall seriously now, which is no good.
